“Lovely spot”
Reviewed 24 March 2011

I really enjoyed staying at Gwenda and Peter's home. A car is a must but worth it for this tranquil picturesque location. I would certainly stay here again.

Owners were very friendly and helpful. Place was not exactly close to downtown so you must have a car. Bed was comfortable and room was very clean but a bit too small.

There are a lot of places to stay in Kaikoura and there is no need to stay here. You are basically get a room in a family's house, which you feel trapped in. Breakfast was nothing special. I may be a coffee snob, but there is no excuse for serving instant coffee to anyone. Long story short, we couldn't wait to leave.

Super location and friendly person in conversation, could come and go as we wanted but no attention to detail or service. Very poor breakfast, hardly any fruit, cereal from rusty topped containers, toast and mugs of tea or coffee.... not what we have been used to on our travels around NZ. Without doubt the worst we stayed in. The 'brochure' details which suggests luxury is offered is way off the mark. The rooms were basically clean when we arrived, but we were left to 'service' them ourselves and dry the towels during our stay, which we were capable of doing but not what we had experienced in any of the other B&B.

It was a great shame that our room was through the family area and we felt imposters in this home. They really need to rearrange their room lay out so that the family have more privacy.Theyhave teenagers living at home. Saying that it was clean and the actual spot was lovely.

The B&B is located outside of the town centre, so it is a peaceful and quiet. The hosts are friendly.

We were traveling in May (late fall) and arrived at 6pm to find no one home, but a key was left for us. The heater had not been turned on in the room for us, so it took many hours for the room to warm up to a comfortable temperature. The breakfast was average.

The Point B&B is the last house you pass when driving out to the end of the Kaikoura Peninsula, where the seals rest on the rocks, just yards from the parked cars and tourists' cameras. It's small (only 2 guest rooms) and a little bit out of the town but provided you have transport it is only 5-6 mins drive right into the centre and all the restaurants / bars. The benefit is its location a couple of hundred metres from the seal santuary and great walks round the headland.
Rooms are clean and well maintained. The owners run a tiny (by NZ standards) small-holding but keep enough sheep to be able to do sheep shearing demonstrations twice a day through the season! Made to feel very welcome and given free access to the kitchen facilities. Breakfast is included - but is of the cereal / toast type rather than cooked which was a shame and the only reason they didn't get 5 stars. But at £36 (Pound Sterling) a night for a room, you really can't complain too much.
Lovely gardens round the house, and views over the coast line with the Kaikoura (pronounced "Kai-kouda" in Maori!) mountains in the background. Great place to base yourself while doing the whale watching (totally fantastic trip, worth every cent) etc that the town is renowned for. Bookable through their own website [--] and highly recommended as good value, clean, well maintained house with nice owners.
