“As good as expected - but pricey!”
Reviewed 20 January 2014 via mobile

We stay at Top 10's when available, usually they are in better locations and the price is competitive with non Top10's... As expected, this holiday park is very tidy, well maintained and great location- short stroll to town. The facilities are great, extremely nice shower rooms, except a few more hooks in the shower room would be awesome, also the extraction fan wasn't quite substantial enough so I was dripped on while getting changed. No problems at all at this place, kitchen was super clean! The price was more than expected, for only $10 more we could've stayed at a motel rather than camper. $24pp for non powered site was the most we paid around the whole South Island, except queenstown.

Thanks for the review – we’re really glad to hear you were impressed with our Parks’ cleanliness, facilities and our location. Kaikoura is currently in peak season and so all of the town's prices reflects this. What's more, as the only 5 star Park in Kaikoura if we compare ourselves to a similar Park in Kaikoura up until the 20th of January we were the same price for a powered or non powered site and now it will only cost a couple $1 more each on a powered site or $2 more on a non powered site. For a comparable experience plus the added benefits of our popular large playground with jumping pillow, games room, TV room, huge park with loads of sites, outdoor heated pool, free private spa and our modern amenities we think our price is justifiable as no other Park in Kaikoura can offer all of this. We have also carefully checked our prices with other regions to ensure we are similar to other TOP 10 Parks near us but of course you may have visited other Parks. I do thank you for your comments though and we will carefully consider this and do another check of pricing in the South Island. Thanks.

Unless it is essential to stay in the middle of the town of Kaikoura, campers are advised to go to the much quieter and scenic campsites at Goose Bay some 15-20 minutes south of town. In summer Top 10 is crowded and noisy. Goose Bay has some of the most beautiful sites in NZ in my opinion - there you can camp right on the coast with amazing sunrises at times and the slight chance to see whales and dolphins from the tent or van. Difficult to sleep at Top 10 with the trains and trucks going past and I was charged more than $50 for a small tent (because only a powered site - that I didn't need - was available.)

Thank you for your comments, we value your opinion. While we appreciate that Goose Bay is another great camping option, it is a 30 kilometre round trip to go back and forth from town to Goose Bay so we find that most of our guests like our location as it allows them to walk everywhere, which is especially convenient with Whale Watch Kaikoura directly behind us. Unfortunately the railway does run near our park, it is the trade off for our great location, and it seems a small number of our guests notice the noise but Goose Bay also has this same noise factor as it is located off State Highway 1 and also has the train go by too. Please be aware that January is by far Kaikoura's busiest month. Often travellers are unaware of this, and many visitors arrive without a booking. Most of our Christmas/January guests enjoy the buzz of the busy season in the park. If you are looking for a less crowded campsite experience, we would recommend travelling outside of this period. I apologise that we had no non-powered sites left; we highly recommend booking at the beginning of January. Unfortunately, if we don’t have non-powered sites left then the next option is powered, which is $2 more. Now that we are near the end of January non-powered sites are more readily available but visitors can always give us a call on the day of their planned arrival to check if they need to book. Thanks again.

We spent 15 nights in our tent, and the one night here was the only one we didn't enjoy :( Tiny sites, way too close together (we could hear when our neighbour rolled over!). That said, communal facilities were very good so, if you're used to crowded campgrounds, or have kids that need "stuff" to entertain them, this would be a good campground for you. It's just not for us so we won't be back.

Hi there,
We are sorry to hear you were disappointed with your stay at our park. Please be aware that the last few days of December and the beginning of January is by far Kaikoura's busiest month. Often travellers are unaware of this, and many visitors arrive without a booking - so for about a week and a half of our peak season we are at full occupancy. Most of our Christmas/January guests enjoy the buzz of the busy season in the park. If you are looking for a less crowded campsite experience, we would recommend travelling outside of the Christmas/January period, as we can offer a much more quiet experience with more sites available. But we thank you for your feedback. :) Take care

We stayed one night on a non-powered site. There were many guests on the campground, so it was a little bit crowded. The toilets near the TV room were dirty, but the showers in the same block were very clean and spacious. In the main sanitary facilities the shower were of a standard size.
The park is situated in walking distance to the Whale Watch.

Thanks for your feedback. We are currently in peak season and the end of Deecember after Christmas was particularly busy so we are at full capacity most nights – If you are looking for a less crowded campsite experience, we would recommend travelling outside of the Christmas/January period. We clean the showers and toilets in the morning and they are checked in the late afternoon and then once again in the evening. We do really appreciate it if guests let us know at any other time if they need attention as when we are in reception we can’t get down to check but will quickly attend to any issues when told about them  Apart from those issues we are glad you found are central location handy and hope you otherwise enjoyed your time in Kaikoura. Take care.

We stayed there on two separate occasions recently, once camping and the other time in a basic cabin. Thought the facilities were great, really clean, well equipped, lots of spaces for the kids to run about. Loved the little pool and spa. Staff attentive and friendly. We'd stay again and recommend.

Had a motorhome site. Sites fairly compact. Site itself is not the most attractive. Facilities were fine although seemed more limited in numbers of toilets for instance compared to other top10 sites. Well positioned just out of Kaikoura. Supermarket, wet fish shop within easr reach.

Stayed in a motel @ the Top 10, incredibly clean and spacious. Staff at the site are brilliant, so friendly and welcoming. So much to see and do in Kiakoura, sadly only had 2 nights there, now wish we had booked more. Great pool, and very well kept grounds. In walking distance to the town with great amenities, meaning no need to use the car! Despite some occasional train noise, definitely recommend this site.

Room Tip: Motel room was near the train track and the entrance to the site, but didn't cause us any issues...
