Colonial Village Resort
Reviewed 3 January 2014

I stayed at Colonial Village for two nights. Reception staff were friendly and welcoming, and the grounds look lovely. The room was small but had a fan and two beds, which was really all we needed. The mattress was not very comfortable, and when removing the linen, the mattress cover looked like it had not been washed in a fair while. The shared bathroom was clean but the second day we had no hot water. Finally, a screen door to our room was the only door we could fully shut and lock, which firstly seems like a bit of a security issue and secondly made it impossible to sleep during a storm. Colonial village is also not near any restaurants, so we had to drive to the esplanade to have dinner.

I stayed at the Colonial Village YHA for 4 nights in October 2013. I had a single room which just had a bed in it, but was perfectly adequate, clean and comfortable. The shared bathrooms were clean and I never had to wait for the showers. The staff were friendly and helpful and can advise and arrange all sorts of trips and travel options for you. Several tours that run from Hervey Bay will collect you from the road entrance to the hostel, or you just meet them at the whale head statue that's just a 15 minute walk away.

The location of the hostel is a little way out of the action, but you can hire bikes or the hostel is on a bus route if you don't fancy the walk to the harbour or the beach. There is also a small Bilson's supermarket about a twenty minute walk away or a little further on is a big Woolworths. Another reviewer mentioned that there was no pavement to the supermarket, but you can walk on the grass verge and unless you have a particular aversion to grass, it really is not a problem. If you don't want to cook, the bar does some nice pizzas and barramundi and chips, or just a 15 minute walk away is the marina and yacht club, with a couple of nice restaurants.

The only downside was that my room backed on to the communal kitchen/bathroom area and could be a bit noisy where other guests slammed doors or were talking loudly during group cooking sessions.

I really enjoyed my stay here and would not hesitate to recommend the hostel to other solo travellers.

We really enjoyed our short stay at the hostel. The kitchen and bathroom facilities were really clean and the rooms comfortable. I would recommend getting a smaller room instead of the big dorm, since you can't lock it and it did not look really comfortable. There was always someone at the reception and the staff was really helpful. The restaurant/bar was very reasonable and a great place to hang out. Unfortiunately the hostel was located really far away from all the restaurants, shopping facilities, the beach and all the clubs and bars ... so I would definitely either invest in a rental car or not stay for a longer period of time.

This lovely hostel is set in some beautiful gardens in a quiet area in Hervey Bay. Perfectly situated to go whale watching (the staff gave me great advice as to which tour operator to use for the time of year) which is Hervey Bay's biggest draw.

The Neptune's Reef Aquarium is also worth a look if you fancy feeding sea turtles and sharks, just 15 mins walk away.

The double room I had was clean, comfy and spacious. The communal area is equally spacious and the bar service and food at the hostel is good. Just as well really, as there really isn't much else around. If you're looking to party or do the cafe/restaurant scene, you're better off staying elsewhere.

Can't say enough about how friendly and helpful the staff are - first class! This really is a great hostel for the price.

For a lazy day, they have a pool/jacuzzi area where you can also sunbathe. Pool table is good and they have a tennis court too!

Stayed two nights at YHA Hervey Bay and while it is a great chilled out hostel there is not much surrounding the hostel it is the other end of town. Definitely recommend hiring a bike for $4 from the hostel and exploring more of Hervey Bay. There are nice cafés on the bike journey. Food at the hostel is of a good quality and there is shuttles from the hostel to the Greyhound pick up which are free.

This is a lovely hostel where each grouping of rooms has its own kitchen with a porch and each of the rooms has a porch. I believe there were only 8 rooms to the grouping. The porches all had hanging baskets with beautiful plantings. The kitchen was well stocked. The hostel was quiet. The staff was very helpful with questions and bookings and a refund of our whale watching trip that was canceled due to weather. Our room was huge and so was the bathroom. Also, the location is near the boat dock. Advice, don't use the Boat Harbor to cross town. Take Booral around the airport. It saves a lot of time. We would definitely come back.

Staff were very helpful giving information about Fraser Island tours, was extremely thankful for free pick-up & drop off from/to bus stop because it's not close! Hervey Bay itself not terribly exciting but this is a bit of a haven with its tropical vibe. Rooms and bathrooms pretty standard, kept clean. Bowl of chips and glasses of wine (as well as other options) very good value in the bar!
