“Great, comfortable stay”
Reviewed 30 July 2014

Stayed here overnight after driving down from Picton. Decided by the time I got to Oamaru at around 4:30 that I'd better stop after driving off the ferry at 6am!

Seeing as how I didn't know how far I'd be driving, I hadn't made any bookings. Every motel in Oamaru was completely booked out, and after asking at a backpackers, found out about the Criterion. I used to attend the heritage weekends when I was young, so I vaguely remembered the hotel before it had been done up. Upon checking into my room, I was pleasantly surprised. Although my room was quite small, it had been restored tastefully and the sandstone walls did a marvellous job of retaining the heat during the night.

Meals in the bar downstairs were reasonably priced considering the serving I was given, and a free continental breakfast was included which was great.

Overall, highly recommended! A+++

Room Tip: Solo rooms are quite small

We had lunch here yesterday and the staff were wonderfully helpful and welcoming. The bar was full so we were directed into a sitting room to have lunch where the "fire" was lit to warm us. When I explained that my grandmother had worked at the hotel in the 1910s and would like to look around, that was no problem at all. The food was good but not great: the seafood chowder could have been thicker although it was reasonably tasty and the bacon in the BLT was a little overdone. The pulled- pork open sandwich was perfectly acceptable. We would come here again.

Love the Criterion Hotel, this is our second stay and sooo beautiful to see the upgrades. Still classic and stylish with oh so much more to offer. Thoroughly recommend this historical experience. Love that it is central to the Wharf precinct with all its nooks and crannies, many things to discover and see. Plus view the penguins. Lovely

This hotel has such a ridiculous amount of charm and history. Our room was a queen sized ensuite upstairs from the restaurant/bar, and it was pretty huge (bedroom with adjoining sitting room and large bathroom). It is right in the heart of some great Victorian buildings in Oamaru and down the road from the blue penguin colony (and almost across the street from Steampunk HQ, if you're into that kind of thing). Very easy place to get to, ample free street parking. Cereals available in the breakfast room, and a full kitchen at the guests' disposal. Sadly did not get to try the food in the bar so no comment on that but the staff in general was very helpful and we really appreciated that.

One point that a few other reviewers made is that they sometimes play live music. Some people may be bothered by this, as you can hear it very well in the rooms, but we loved it and the band was great. It actually helped me fall asleep because I'm used to background noise! At any rate, great great place for the price and one we'd definitely stay in again.

We called in at Oamaru over lunch on our way to Mt Cook. We found the Criterion whilst exploring the fascinating buildings around it and had a delicious light lunch and a drink. We were made most welcome and totally loved the atmosphere of the place.

Room Tip: We cannot comment on this because we were passing through and had lunch. We did look at rooms upstai...

We came through Oamaru on a 3 week self-contained cycle trip and spent one night in the Criterion. It was very quiet and comfy--I would especially recommend the en suite room for a couple. The location is perfect, right near the Victorian street and the Steampunk museum and the coast. The staff was very accommodating about storing our bikes in the office at night. The only thing I would say is that the continental breakfast was a bit skimpy, and we had to go out for coffee as there was no plunger and instant just doesn't do it.

Room Tip: Get the en suite if you can spring for a little more money.

This was stay no. 3 here. In the past it was quaint and in a fascinating location. Now the hotel has been renovated and superbly so. Only one room has ensuite facilities but sharing a bathroom (2 in fact) was not a problem at all. Facilities and decore are excellent. There was no problem re sound coming upstairs from the bar at all. Breakfast was help yourself to cereal, toast, tea and coffee etc and this was included in the room rate. It felt as if we owned the place. Loved the Criterion.

Room Tip: The room at the back of the hotel (the ensuite room) can become a penguin viewing platform at night...
