Thank you Cucina 1871 for bringing Italy to Oamaru. After many recommendations we decided to make the 3 hour drive from Christchurch and were lucky enough to be one of the guests who got to enjoy the "Italian Long Lunch" (secretly we were excited you had a cancellation so we could come). The lunch gavew us the opportunity to try a variety of dishes. We were greeted by your staff and welcomed like we were part of the family - and of course there were many guests ready to dine. The service was outstanding - for such large numbers dining at no stage did we have to attend to ourselves, nothing was a problem and you could tell all staff "Love What They Do". Then came the food - well actually the "Prosecco" first I have a new found love for sparkling wine - but back to the food, never having been a fan of Eggplant - I am converted the Eggplant (Aubergine) Parmigiana had me enjoying seconds, the Pork Belly would be highly recommended - it was full of flavour, tender and melted in your mouth, visiting an Italian restaurant must include Pasta and we weren't disappointed with the Basil Pesto Spagetti. Not often eating dessert usually we had a Lemon Tart and Semi Freddo - a beautiful way to finish our meal. I am already planning a weekend to Oamaru again to enjoy the hospitality of the Cucina 1871 and we can't wait to try the Pizza's, although I think my husband will struggle to sway from the Pork Belly.

came in on a sunday night, no reservayion, but the hostess was extremely friendly, accomodating and hospital, a great first impression. we sat down, ordered and were served quickly. the food was good, not great. we had a mahrgarita pizza, pear blue cheese and prosciutto salad, scallops, and rissotto. the scallops and rissotto were the best, the salad and pizza were pretty standard fare. great service throughout, fair prices for an italian restaurant, and a nice atmosphere earn this place 4 stars

Since this lovely restaurant has opened in Oamaru we really struggle to go anywhere else! We are always greeted with huge smiles by the super friendly staff, the atmosphere is incredible in this place! Whether we come with our two young children for a pizza on a Friday or with friends or a large group- the service and the food are consistent every time.
We have worked our way through the menu and love how it keeps changing to offer us new and wonderful things to try while still offering the favorites.
If dining for a first time- we recommend the pork belly for a main- absolutely to die for! Also arancini rice balls or polenta chips for entrée. We ordered sticky date pudding to share for dessert- get one each!! We had to order another one for hubby as after one bite I was not sharing YUM!! If there is something you like the sound of but want to tweak it- ask!! We have always found the chefs more than accommodating!
Welcoming team and environment and devine food- an absolute MUST TRY!! It is amaaazing!!

This restaurant looked lovely & was very nice inside with good attentive service. There were plenty of diners & families are catered for too.
I chose one of the specials described to me by the waitress. It was ravioli with prawns. However it came with a cream sauce (not mentioned & something I would have avoided) which was also for my palate over garlicky. Also the accompanying rocket was very tough & leathery (perhaps an unusual variety?). My other half had seafood linguine which he described as OK nothing special. His pud of chocolate and almond torte with red berries was very dry & unappetizing.
Some of the problem was obviously that the staff had not accurately described the specials to me.
Such a shame as we had been looking forward to a good meal.
Overall very disappointed.

After learning that our original choice was closed, we asked the owner there her recommendation as a "distant second." She said "Oh, no, Cucina 1871 is every bit as good as we are." An honest and very true appraisal. An amazing little place where it was never expected, owned by Oamrau natives who came home to open it.
