“Best hostel in New Zealand!”
Reviewed 15 June 2013

I have stayed twice in the Tasman Bay backpackers in Nelson and each time I loved it more. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and they have the best chocolate fudge and ice cream for free every night! the place is clean and quiet, and very close to town center. It is the small details which make this hostel so good so you'll have to go and see for yourself. i couldn't recommend a better hostel!

One of the best hostels I stayed in during my six week trip around New Zealand. The atmosphere was lovely and homely, I felt totally at ease relaxing on the sofas and really enjoyed the guitar music! There appeared to be a lot of people staying there but it didn't feel at all big or crowded. Unfortunately, I missed the free chocolate cake, but was told it was delicious! Good location, about a ten minute walk into the main bar/shopping area, and a large room, with stable wooden bunks (not wobbly metal!) free breakfast a real added bonus, and I can see that the outside would be fantastic to use in the summer. A real gem, would definitely recommend.

My sister n I stumbled across this hostel, and I immediately fell in love!! We came in the winter, so we were treated to free breakfast, and chocolate pudding in the evening ;) It's these little touches that make this place so special - hot water bottles, free towels, shopping bags to use, and unlimited wifi - it's a traveller's dream! If you're looking for a bed in Nelson, you really can't go past this place, it's gorgeous!

Room Tip: My sister and I took a private twin room and it was so affordable!!

We stayed in a private twin en suite room with an outdoor area which was pleasant. Not too noisy at the time and hostel is convientely located with about a 10-15min walk into town. Good atmosphere even though it is small. The owner, Dutch, was very polite and hospitable and could organise any tours you wanted though at the time we have already planned our tours. The free chocolate pudding and ice cream is fantastic, tastes good and something to look forward to in the evenings. Overall a great stay. Make sure you talk the valley walk to Matai Valley along the river and into the countryside and do a picnic or something, its a great walk.

Myself and my girlfriend stayed at Tasman Bay for 2 nights, 1 either side of doing the Abel Tasman Coast Track. We thought the hostel was awesome and the private room we had did the job and had a heater in the room which turned out to be very necessary on one of the nights.
The hostels staff were really cool and helpful and at 8pm every night there was chocolate pudding which we sadly missed both times.
The location was pretty good as well, it is around a 5 minute walk to town and the bus stop is very close and located just behind the i-site. Around the corner is also the Foundary Heritage Park which is surprisingly interesting and has a micro-brewery inside.

To get to Abel Tasman we went with Abel Tasman Coachlines for $20 per person one way which picked us up and dropped us off at our hostel which was very handy.
