We stayed here overnight and possibly didn't research enough beforehand. It was fine, but obviously very wedding-y and a little theme-park like. We stayed in a 2 bedroom villa and upstairs was ok, but downstairs was soooooo dark and felt dingy - part of the style of the decor, but during lovely sunny weather it felt a bit too enclosed and "ye olde English" vibe just a little odd. Maybe it's lovely and cosy in winter.... The gardens and grounds were lovely but it all felt a little clichéd. Ate at the restaurant and have to say it was my least favourite meal in all of NZ and I wouldn't recommend it - unimaginative and bland (function food...?). Overall the hotel was very clean and well appointed and I do have to say a huge plus for TWO very well appointed bathrooms both with fantastic showers! Also the reception and restaurant staff were lovely so plus for that.

Dear Puddingkate
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your comments regarding your recent stay with us at the Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco. I am sorry that you found the ground floor of the cottage to be a bit dark. Whilst the exposed beams provide character and have a link to Nelson we understand that the English village look and “old worlde” charm is not for everyone. Regarding your comments about the style of food at The Orangerie restaurant I will be following up with the head chef and restaurant manager, please note we believe this was a true exception to our normal high standard of food quality as we are continually recognised with awards such as the NZ Beef & Lamb plates. However we need to be highly consistent at all times so rest assured we are taking the appropriate measures to address the problem. All our efforts are concentrated in preventing future occurrences. At the Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco Apts, we strive to provide a superior service experience for every customer; therefore your feedback is very important to us. We truly appreciate your positive feedback regarding the cleanliness of the hotel and the spacious bathrooms as well as the restaurant and reception staff, I will definitely pass these comments on and I am sure that the team will really appreciate you taking the time to mention this.
Thank you once again for sharing your comments.
Kindest Regards

Your experience at this "luxury ""grand " apartment will be very dependent on which unit you are lucky enough to be allocated .

It can range from light and welcoming if you are places by the " river" to dark and morose if you are on the ground floor near the expressway.

The concept of these apartments is based on the quaint little "Honest Lawyer B+B across the street.

In contrast however this place lacks the attention to detail and maintenance that is found in the aforementioned.

Although build many years later these units show wear and look tired.

Non matching furnishings /cracking ceilings: side tables by the beds which look less that hygienic / poorly tuned Tv with occasional interference and WiFi reception issues make me wonder how a company such as Mercure dares to use terms such as "grand " and luxurious .

My suggestion to travellers would
be to spend their money at equally good and less expensive places around the city unless you specifically arrange to be in units of your choice......

Dear Mattpaps
Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience at the Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco Apts and my sincerest apologies regarding your disappointing experience. I am following up with our housekeeping and maintenance staff regarding the areas you have bought to our attention. I know they will be extremely disappointed that we delivered anything less than our high standard of room presentation. We have just this week completed an upgrade to our wifi and are looking to improve the wireless signal through the installation of more wireless routers around the resort to help eliminate any reception issues. As always ongoing upgrading of a property is necessary and through the quieter winter period maintenance such as plastering of ceilings can occur. We take comments like yours very seriously so rest assured that we are taking the appropriate measures to address the issues raised and wherever possible prevent future occurrence.
Thank you once again for sharing your comments and once again please accept my apology.
Kindest Regards

This is our second visit to this hotel and it never fails to impress. The staff are very friendly and helpful. This time we had a spacious apartment on the first floor. The kitchenette had everything you would need to "do it yourself", we only used it for breakfasts. The bathroom had a huge shower and a good selection of their own shampoo and shower gels. Although there are a lot of units here it is a very quiet place to stay.

Dear candt1969
Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience with us at the Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco. I am delighted to read that this was your second stay with us and that we continue to impress you, this is fantastic feedback and I will be sharing this with the rest of the team who I know will really appreciate your feedback. The one bedroom studios are perfect for a single person or a couple travelling for more than one night or for those guests who prefer cooking facilities in their room. The resort is laid out like an English Village and as you have mentioned has lots of units and cottages which are all spread out around the property, I am really pleased to read that find it to be a quiet place to stay. We hope to be able to welcome you back for a third stay with us in the near future.
Thank you again for sharing your lovely feedback on our tripadvisor page.

We stayed here on two separate occasions during a trip around the South Island. The first stay was in one of the hotel rooms in the main reception building. Room 3 is quite small but the bathroom is spacious. The decor is very stylish but is quite dark, which I found a little claustrophobic. Has a small window that opens on to the car park, that you can open to let some fresh air in. No fridge in the room but you can put items in the communal fridge in the passage way. From this room there was a little bit of traffic noise from the main road just behind the complex. Our second stay, a few days later, was in a 2 bedroom apartment which was so much better than the hotel room. Room 402 was two storey overlooking the village green. 2 bedrooms and a very spacious bathroom upstairs and a lounge, dining and well equipped kitchen downstairs. No traffic noise from this apartment. Had dinner in the Orangerie restaurant, excellent service from Vianni and Maz. Very nice food and excellent value when you have an Accor card that gives you 50% off the food. Would definitely choose this accommodation again.

Room Tip: Hotel rooms in the main building are quite small but OK for a 1 night stay. The 2 bed apartments a...

Thank you for sharing your recent experience on our tripadvisor page and we appreciate your constructive feedback regarding the standard hotel rooms, you are correct in saying that these rooms are more suited to those people who are staying for one night. At the Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco we have 4 different room types which cater to a wide range of different travellers needs and budgets.
I am pleased to read that you enjoyed the two bedroom cottage that you stayed in on your second visit and that you received excellent service in the Orangerie restaurant, Vianni and Maz were just thrilled to read your wonderful comments and I am sure that this feedback will serve as an encouragement not only to them but to all of our staff as we continuously strive to improve the quality of our service.
Thank you once again for taking the time to share your feedback and we hope to be able to welcome you back to the Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco Apts one day in the near future.

The hotel looks like an English country village, and is absolutely adorable. We had a two story cottage, with a downstairs kitchen and sitting area and two bedrooms / two bathrooms upstairs. The location is right across from the beach, and you can take a delightful walk along a coastal track. The food at the Orangerie, both breakfast and dinner, was good.
Of all the places we stayed in NZ this was one of the most reasonably priced ones.

The Orangerie - Restaurant

I made a booking for my parents to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary and they came away feeling as if they had been treated like royalty. They loved being 'priority' customers and had a wonderful night.

I had requested champagne to be brought out when they were seated and to have the entire meal charged back to my credit card at the end of the evening. This was all done and the staff gave Mum and Dad the receipt (stapled, so they couldn't see the cost) to pass on to me later.
