“Honestly Very Good”
Reviewed 7 May 2014

Stayed here for two nights while on business in the area - the location is perfect for Airport and main road links as well as being close to local shops etc
The food served in the bar is first class both at breakfast and evening and would certainly stay again next time in Nelson.

Room Tip: The airport being close does cause a little noise - but as there are not too many flights in or out...

Hi There,

Thank you for your review and feedback. As you were here on business, we thought you may like to know that we are just about to announce or Corporate Collection. This is where businesses can sign onto the Collection and receive discounts and Corporate rates! You also mentioned you enjoyed your breakfast (Thank you we will tell the Chef!), and our Corporate Collection members actually receive a Free Breakfast when they stay with us.
Perhaps you can keep this in mind for your next stay in Nelson.
We hope to see you again soon!

We found the environment higgily piiggily. The tables were crowded and we felt a bit stuffed in a corner. The decor was off putting, the spiderwebs in particular. My daughter got the fish of the day (the most expensive meal on the menu) and found the fish to be old and tough, not what you would expect for the price we payed. The other meals were average ,the veggie /falafel burger being mushy and undercooked. They need other items on the children's menu apart from hotdogs and chips. All in all it was expensive and disapointing. On a good note the staff were friendly tho they do need to brush up on their knowledge of wine- Pinot Gris is not Chardonnay. sue from Nelson.

Hi There,

Thank you for your review, and for giving us a few pointers on improvements. We welcome all feedback and relish the opportunity to improve every experience at The Honest Lawyer.
We are disappointed to hear that your meal with us was not satisfactory, as our talented Chefs are usually producing delicious dishes.
Our décor is meant to have a cosy and comfortable feel, so we apologise that this was not how it appeared on the day you dined with us. We do re-arrange the tables sometimes to make a little more room in the restaurant when we need to shut off part of it for a function. Perhaps this was what had occurred when you dined with us. Your feedback will be passed along to the Chef and to our staff so that we can hope to improve your experience with us next time.
Thank you once again for your feedback and we hope to see you back in the restaurant again soon!

Walked in through the garden into the Bar and was greeted with a friendly welcome. Can we set up a Tab? No problem the barperson said. What would you like? We sat down surrounded by rustic artefacts from years gone by. The meal service was excellent and the staff very friendly.
The meal was well presented and very generous. We ordered a cheese platter but the generosity of the serve would take too long to consume so they wrapped it up for consumption in our room. We were so impressed we came back for breakfast and then dinner the following night. Great spot and lovely staff.

Quaint Tudor style original.
My favorite is the rose cottage as it offers privacy and has a real home feel.
Have stayed in the regular rooms before which are nicely appointed too but can be noisy if you happen to stay near the honeymoon suite....( lots of nocturnal noise if you know what I mean)
Great staff and fantastic pub downstairs which means you can merely stumble up after having had a few of their fine ales......

This was a pleasant one night stay for us - room only with no breakfast. The pub was well done and does look like a British pub complete with great beer garden. We had one of the cottage rooms outside and that was nice and private but it was quite dark inside and the decor was a bit on the shabby side. They did have a spa bath / shower but no plug which was a little strange.
We ate at the pub and had a hot stone meal which was delicious but the portion sizes were not generous enough for us.
A couple of things about the pub. It is very close to the airport at Nelson which makes things quite lively as all the planes are taking off and landing, and there are lots of our friends the sand flies and mosquitoes in the area. The first didn't bother us but the second did and we spent several days itching and scratching afterwards.
Overall we enjoyed our stay but it wasn't without some niggles.

We stayed in this lovely old world (purpose built ) hotel just out of Nelson. Our room was made to represent old stables and was quite dark. The room itself was large, as was the ensuite bathroom. We had a small problem with the plumbing which was tended to immediately, and the only complaint we would have was that the continental breakfast included in the deal was the absolute worst we had ever seen in all our travels. This is the main area that this hotel needs to improve on. The grounds and outdoor setting is ideal for the summer, service was good, we would stay again but skip the breakfast.

We loved this place. Outside of the main town. The place has a lot of charm of an old English pub and great value for money. We had the Honeymoon Suite - great. We were also there over New Years Eve. A BBQ with a jazz band in the afternoon and early evening was superb - good for families. There was even a bouncy castle for the kiddies. Later on the band was fabulous to sing and dance the New Year in. Excellent meals. Would definitely go back.

Room Tip: Go for the honeymoon suite
