Large Victorian house located near CBD of Nelson. Rooms are not fancy, but comfortable. Rooms are all upstairs. Hosts very gracious and helpful with information of area. Complimentary Port Wine in our room!

What a great place to stay!!! Located close to town in a very green area, just in front of the mountainrange, this lovely place offers a lot for a fair price. It looks beautiful from the outside, and when you enter you feel put back to the 19th century. It´s an old but very well maintained house, with big red carpets on the floor and rustic furniture. I´ve stayed in the Beethoven room which was amazing, a huge bed and a small, and two big doors to the verandah. All guests may use the verandah and it´s just nice to sit outside and relax. I got plenty of towels and blankets, as well as a little bit of portwine to taste. On the floor is a fridge, free tea, coffee and cookies. My private bathroom was on the other end of the floor (due to the design of the house), but all other rooms have their bathroom ensuite.
Breakfast in the morning included several sorts of cereals, croissants, toast, chease, jam, fruit, yoghurt, and orange and tomatojuice. Lovely.
The hosts, Vikki and David are very polite and correct, and they really give you a lot for the money you pay! On my last day David even gave me a lift to the busstation. I can highly recommend to stay at the Sussex House.

We stayed here for Christmas in 2008 and it's taken me this long to write a review. Apologies Vicki and David! We have been thinking about Nelson a quite a bit lately and would love to go back.
The house is beautiful and very nicely furnished and the hosts are extemely friendly. We had two rooms as we could not get the same room for the whole stay. It was not a problem and in fact was quite nice as it gave us an opportunity to try two out. Nelson really turned out to be a fantastic place and we were blessed with lovely weather.
There is (or was, I hope it's still there!) a great pub about five minutes walk from the house called the sprig and fern. It's small but they brew their own beer (and cider!). There's a great fish and chip shop next to the pub and they'll bring the food over to you while you enjoy your pint. I'm rambling a little but it's one of those special things about NZ.
Back to the hotel review...splendid place. Wish I was there now.

Lovely, clean b and b in quiet area yet within walking distance of Nelson. Tasty continental breakfast provided by pleasant and helpful owners. Lots of places to eat in Nelson. Walked up nearby Botanic Hill which is supposedly the 'centre of New Zealand' with fantastic views of Nelson and surrounding area.

The Sussex House is a beautiful old B & B. It's within walking distance to shopping, restaurants, botanical gardens and various walking paths around town. We were there for less than 24 hours, but the breakfast was nice and there was coffee and tea service upstairs. We could here people in the next room a bit. A lovely old house.

Sussex House is located on the banks of the river, by a bridge and within easy walk to the town centre. It's in a quiet area, and Queen's Park nearby is pretty park. We had an en-suite room with access to the verandah, so it was lovely to sit in the sun enjoying a drink, and looking out over the town.
We could make drinks from the well stocked sideboard on the landing, but the complimentary carafe of port in our room was somewhat wasted on us, as neither of us drink it.: a little feature that illustrates what other people have described as 'old fashioned'. David and Vikki are very attentive, and David airs his views readily: if you prefer a more 'distant' host you might feel a bit overwhelmed.
Breakfasts were typical of what we had elsewhere in NZ, and the warm croissants were a nice touch.
The geographical centre of NZ is about 5 minutes walk away, and has great views over Nelson, and well worth the climb.

Beautiful old house near botanical gardens, CBD and hilltop climb. Easy walk to restaurants and town. Nice continental breakfast - no hot food but great baked goods and even had gluten free bread for me. Lovely homemade yougurt (a staple in NZ I think!). Could hear a bit from room next to ours, esp. in bathroom - a tad unsettling if not really disturbing. Didn't have much interaction with hosts but our various taxi drivers to and from bus station and airport were terrific (great train/bus up from Kaikoura) and had lots of suggestions. No wi-fi but a computer all guests could use.
