“Absolutely Awesome!”
Reviewed 8 June 2011

The Bug Backpackers is a great great place to stay in Nelson. It surely has great character. The owner has what I'd like to say is the highest attention to detail I have ever seen in a backpacker! From the quirkly and awesomely decorated "bug" at the entrance to the egg holders in the kitchen everything is perfectly in theme. We even had "bug" shaped chocolates waiting for us in our room - a delightful touch indeed!

The place is colourful and cheerful to the core!

been there on 4-5.5.11 in a double ensuite room. the room was really big and comfortable. it had one double bed and one single bed. hostel facilities were very good: washing machine & drier (3 nz$ each, soap included); kitchen and its pans, pots, dishes, cutlery. in the morning, Anthony prepares breads (yami ...). it is important to note that there is a free wi-fi as well as a pair of computers (in case you don't have one)/
location is not a problem at all. it is a mile or so (say 2 km) from the city centre, but most of the visitors have cars (no parking problems in the Bug or its vicinity , opposite, for example, Dunedin's Hogwartz).

We spent 2 nights here in the Lovebug room, a double room. The hostel is certainly one of the best we have been in during our 2 months in New Zealand. It is very modern, with 2 great kitchens, plenty of cooking equipment - and for once someone has thought about the set-up and how to best use the space for a large number of people cooking at once.

Our room was really cute, with the towels shaped into a heart, little chocolates and a modern sink unit. There is free wireless, a big bonus as well. There is also a large garden with apple tree.

Anthony, one of the owners, was brilliant, very helpful and a good guy. He and his girlfriend obviously work really hard to keep the place so clean.

Just a few little things keep it from the full marks. The common room area is way too small for the amount of people - obviously this is only an issue if the hostel is busy. There was only one toilet and shower where we were for quite a lot of people. There were more on the other side of the hostel but required a walk through the common room and then the kitchen.

Another thing to bear in mind is that the nearest supermarket is about a 20 minute walk away, another 5 mins into town.

So nearly perfect, a 4.5 out of 5 if I could give it one!

I stayed here with my partner for 2 nights. Was recommended by a friend. We had a double room with shared bathroom. Excellent price $66. Bathroom was actually only shared with one other room and was right across the hallway from our room. Basic room as you'd expect from backpackers but very tidy and clean, new bathroom. Nice touches like welcome chocs and VW bug theme throughout. Apparently free wireless internet (didn't try it). Free bikes to use. Friendly staff. Didn't use communal facilities.
The backpackers is far from town - didn't matter to us as we had a car, 5 mins drive but a little too far to walk.
If you have transport this is a fantastic value for money with tidy clean room for only $66 for a couple!

This is one of the best backpackers we have stayed in since we started coming to New Zealand in 2008. From the moment we arrived, it came across as being well organised: check in was easy, kitchens were well equipped and the double bedrooms were spacious and characterful. There is also ample outdoor space. Free internet is another big plus, with so many competitors charging for this. All of this made for a very enjoyable two night stay - excellent value overall and highly recommended.

This was a great hostel. All rooms were individually decorated and there were NO BUNKS. A real treat. Each bed has it's own side table and light, such luxury when you normally have to balance your gear with you in your bunk/hang it over the side in a bag/get neck ache with your head torch!
The owners have put photos of their travels up in each room giving a great personal feel.
I loved the fact that you weren't allowed to use the FREE WiFi in the kitchen or dining area. Many other places i had been, the communal areas just had folk mesmerised by their facebook/myspace pages-kinda antisocial. The are plenty of areas where you can use it though if you do feel like escaping for a while.
Super friendly people with a special 'drinks fridge' outside to ensure you don't have chose whether you're gonna have cold milk for your cereal or a cold beer after a lovely cycle along the coast on the FREE BIKES, did I mention the freshly baked FREE BREAD the leave out in the morning.
A fantastic place.....i loved it. Go there.

After paying only $70 for a double ensuite room in a backpackers, we did not expect such a luxury massive room with smart decor, huge windows and a brand new bathroom! It was far nicer than hotels we've paid twice the price for! I liked the VW theme in the decoration too, although it wasn't too obvious. Being a backpackers though the communal areas were pretty much overrun, as there was a arge group staying at the same time, and they were a bit noisy at night and took over the BBQ area, but it all looked really good - can't blame them! Bit of a walk from the centre of Nelson.
