“Awsome Stay”
Reviewed 13 April 2013

We just spent a week with the Harris' at Harris Hill. It was awesome. The family is so friendly. We came as strangers but left as friends. There is so much exploring to do and coming with three you boys we really appreciated the space to run around. It is an excellent location for view and an easy 5 min access to town. I woulnd't stay anywhere else.

Being from the USA we tried to stay at places that represented New Zealand, and this was a home run!! We LOVED this place!! Our cottage was so cozy (fresh flowers were on the table when we arrived), and the view was amazing! The Harris Family were all so friendly, kind, and helpful! We loved Daisy the pig, and we got to meet Jack...one of their horses that was in the last 2 "Lord of the Rings" movies!! We didn't want to leave!!

Room Tip: We stayed in the "City Lights" cottage. The name is perfect because at night you can see a...

We spent 2 months in "Grandma's" cottage at Harris Hill and loved the experience. The whole family (Sue, Mike, Rachel, Wayne and others) are all very friendly and helpful. The cottage was well appointed and immaculate. The views from the hill are spectacular and the bird song delightful. We really enjoyed being able to walk out the door and go for a wonderful walk around the farm property. They have a lot of repeat business from year to year and we can see why ... we have already re-booked for next year.

Do you want scenery? Do you want serenity? Do you want farm living? Do you want clean comfort. Harris Hill Cottages have these and more. We are not single time stayers at this location. The cottages are located 1000 feet above the Tasman Bay and looking West over the bay at the snow capped Able-Tasman Mountains (in the winter season). These are self contained units with everything needed to stay for one night (you'll be sorry it isn't longer) to a month or more. The nice part is that if you don't want to "cook tonight", the town of Nelson is a brief 7 minute drive. Nelson has many good restaurants to satisy any ethnic craving. Another great thing is that you become a part of the Harris family. They will give you your solitude, if that's what you want, or they will stop their busy tasks and talk for as long as you want. I guarantee, when you leave, you'll feel like you're leaving your own family. You really need to look at their site on the internet to get a descent perspective of the views and the accomidations. Don't forget, it is a working farm with sheep shearing, cattle movements and sheep dogs to make the task a bit easier. If you decide to stay here, you won't be disappointed. Let us repeat, you WON'T be disappointed. We've been staying there for the last nine years staying six months at a time and would go back in a heart-beat. In fact, we'll probably do that.

Room Tip: The best tip we can give is to contact Sue, the owner. She will listen to what you want and then te...

We spent two nights here during exquisite weather, and were sad to leave. The lambs, sheep, calfs, dogs and puppies, llama, pet pig, and wonderful hosts Sue, Mike and their family, all along with a well-equipped farm-style studio - made for quite the unexpected treat. We barbecued and cooked every night and only drove down to Nelson for must-have supplies, otherwise we would have stayed put. Great walking too along the hills and farmland.

Great shower, nice hot water and pressure!

If you come from a flat country, beware the drive up - if you're not used to driving up steep hills, put your car in low gear and just drive up carefully and slowly and watch out for cars coming the other way. If you are going up you have right of way, the car coming down should find somewhere to pull over for you. We didn't have any issues going up or down, but it's something that should be mentioned as it's a fairly unusual approach with incredible views (watch the road, not the views!). Get your groceries before you come up so you don't have to go back down again and miss a moment of the sun - unless you're after the great fish and chips from the local.

Room Tip: All cottages have heaps of sun. If you're a family you'll want a cottage as the studios are...

We have stayed a lot of places in Asia in our many years here and this place stands out as one of our top two favorites (the other was staying on a sandbar in the ocean off the island of Sabah). The cottages were well equipped and in very good condition. We easily cooked and ate in our outside. There was also laundry. The amazing part though were the views of the city. We stayed in City Lights and it was worth the extra money. The animals were also amazing, they have so many it is hard to list them all - dogs, sheep, goats, horses, a pony, a pig, rabbits, horses, etc. Our two-year-old daughter just loved running around, eating outside, and seeing the animals. This was the most memorable place in which we stayed in NZ and it is highly recommended. Do note two things though. There is no internet in the cottages and they only take cash.

As an update, all cottages now have internet access. We have several payment options including bank transfers and cheques. We do not as yet process credit card payments. Thanks.

Hello Sue, Lucy here, I had a fantastic time at your farm. I got Chance to feed the lambs, and the pig you give your food scraps to Daisy the pig she will be very grateful! Worth the climb, fantastic views. Loved the horses too got to feed them some bread, apparently one of them was in lord of the rings.
The cottage we were in had a double bed and bedroom with 2 single beds, I slept well. Had a washing machine and a washing line, one last thing I loved the views of the Able Tasman.
