Well my wife and I went there for an anniversary dinner and it was beautiful. The only thing wrong was the size. Just wish there was a bit more on the plate as I couldn't get enough beautiful food. Other then that very very happy costumers. Thanks

This will rate as one of my best ever dining experiences. The food was just divine. The combinations of flavours was so unusual but worked every time. I had a blue cheese souffle with toffee-covered hazelnuts. It sounds a bit odd but was yummy. Then I had a great steak with something dark and delicious on top and finally a slice of cheesecake with rhubarb.

This restaurant is listed as the top restaurant in Nelson, so as we were there for a couple of days we booked a table. We had been to Ford (almost right next door) the previous night and had enjoyed that very much, so were looking forward to Hopgoods. When we arrived, we felt the restaurant looked a bit bland. It seemed to lack an atmosphere or ambiance. However we then looked at the menu, and the food sounded delicious, although some of the descriptions were difficult to follow. Our waitress answered our questions after checking with the kitchen, and three of our party ordered the NZ Scampi entree. We had been told that there were 7 scampi in the dish. Two of us ordered the duck confit which was served with Jerusalem artichokes (so the menu said - different to the duck confit on their website I notice).
When the scampi entrees arrived, the "scampi" was not in the shell as is normally the case and looked exactly like prawns (curled up but with no tail). We questioned the waitress who brought over the manager, and she said they scoop out the scampi meat before frying it. All I can say is if it really is scampi, why spoil the flavour by frying it out of the shell (making it tough). It woiuld be good to mention this on the menu too, so that people know it is not scampi as traditionally served.
Then to the mains. The duck came with no artichoke. We tried to get the waitresses attention, but were almost through our mains before she again brought the manager who assured us there was artichoke in there. We assured her there was not, so she brought some out of the kitchen on another plate, and said the chef said he had put it in the dish. This was most annoying, as she implied we don't know what artichokes taste like (i.e. we ate them without noticing). No apology (we had finished our mains by this time) - just an arrogance that was getting wearisome. However we turned to the dessert menu which looked good. There is an Affogato with Pedro Ximinez on the side. Having toured Spain where we enjoyed the sherry on many occasions, we asked if we could buy a bottle of the Pedro Ximenez to enjoy with our desserts (PX comes in dessert wine size bottles). We were told that they didn't have enough to sell us a bottle. We queried this as it was offered with the Affogato, and in a sauce for another dish, so they must surely have a supply. But no go. They offered us a glass (2 shots) for $14.95 (the Affogato on the menu was only $15.95 and included the two shots of PX, so we were surprised at this.) The manager gave some spurious answer about being unable to charge any more for the dessert. Needless to say we abandoned this restaurant with questionable scampi, one of the main parts of a meal missing, and questionable PX (we wonder if they use ordinary sherry and call it PX.) We went back to Ford and had a dessert there which we enjoyed very much. The manager at Ford found us some wonderful port - showing the sort of service we had hoped to find at Hopgoods. We could not see how Hopgoods got its top billing - we thought Ford was much better.

We had an amazing evening meal here. We had Bread, warm olives & truffle butter as a starter, Braised lamb wrapped in bacon, bubble & squeak, roast carrots & wild nettle salsa verde and Pure Angus beef fillet, mushroom gratin, parmesan polenta, watercress pesto & red wine. The starter and both mains were amazing and couldn't be faulted.

The service was fast (we had a booking), friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was sophisticated but casual. It had a vibrant social atmosphere, which we really enjoyed.

Visited this restaurant on the basis of a strong recommendation by a local resident. We had an enjoyable dinner but it fell short of my expectations. The place is advertized as 'bar and restaurant'. We arrived early to have a cocktail but were declined because they don't have a bartender or even the basic liquor available to make a martini. I ordered a rare steak but was told that the steaks were served 'medium-rare' - implying that they are precooked. My steak was nice but not served rare to my liking. We enjoyed our meal and would certainly visit again, but next time with lower expectations. It is at the higher end of restaurants we have visited in Nelson but its a way off what I would recognize as fine dining.
