We spent a full day biking with the Gentle Cycling Co - spent most of the day on one of the trails south of Nelson in the wine country, then did the Nelson City Tour with Rose in the evening. The wine country was beautiful and the city tour was a great way to get oriented to Nelson - plus Rose is a lot of fun and has a lot of interesting information about the area. Bikes and helmets were in good condition, as were the trails Rose recommended. We'd definitely go back.

Really enjoyed our bike hire which we did the day after an over-long walk in Abel Tasman NP so it was a nice rest for our feet too!
The routes are wonderfully flat and the bikes are really good quality. We had some issues with the maps but you'd struggle to get lost and the cycle tracks mean that you hardly ever have to 'compete' with the traffic - which is just as well with wineries and the McCashin brewery in Stoke so easily accessible!
We hired the bikes for half a day (4 hours) but ended up using them for 5 and paying the (reasonable) extra charge.

We had a great afternoon cycling around the wineries. Rose was wonderful, and had well maintained bikes as well as safety gear. She had a map to strap to the handle bars that was all laid out with cycle tracks and places to see. The paths we took were all fairly level, so no strain at all. We would highly recommend this activity for anyone

Nelson is a neat place to cycle in with many trails, etc., and Rose is a sweetheart and helpful host. If you're planning on renting a bike for sightseeing and exercise, go for it. In our opinion though forget the wineries and do a brewery tour if you're into that. The wineries are few and hard to get to. Do Marlborough instead if you're looking for a variety of wines and tasting rooms.

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts in a review. Nelson is certainly becoming a really popular cycling area. Our cycling routes are based on and around the Great Taste Cycle Trail and the Wine and Beer route is our most popular route for folks wanting a half day or full day ride. The 2 craft breweries are certainly very close to our HQ (less than 1 km in fact!) and both do brewery tours so if you don't want to ride far that is a good choice. Most people want to go further than that, and there are now 5 tasting rooms within 6km of our HQ. There is also a quirky beer garden cafe, a cheese shop, a design gallery and even a Peanut Butter factory (with tastings) within that distance so it's great for people who want some other tasty things as well. For more information on Nelson Wineries, check out the Nelson Wineart website.
Cheers, Rose

We stayed in Nelson and we were picked up and brought home later for a very reasonable fee of $10 per person (cheaper than any taxi and more convenient than public transport). The cost of renting the bikes was very reasonable. We got a little lost at the beginning of our ride but as soon as we got onto the dedicated cycle routes everything was sweet. The cycle routes are pretty flat so you don't have to be super fit. The bikes are also of good quality and very suitable for the cycle routes. Plenty of places to visit along the way such as vine yards, craft brewery's (make sure and visit the stoke brewery cafe) and cafes.
