“Excellent self-contained units”
Reviewed 24 September 2012

The Tahuna Beach Holiday Park is a massive campground complex with numerous accommodation options. It is located 10-15 minutes (driving) south of the city of Nelson, in Tahunanui, where there are nice sandy beaches, a small zoo, and some theme-park style attractions including a water slide, bumper boats, go karts, etc. There are several decent-to-excellent restaurants within walking distance.

This review is for the self-contained units, which were NZ$110 per night when we stayed there on Saturday 15th September 2012. We wanted two units adjacent to each other, so we called to book, which was easy enough but we did not receive any type of confirmation (an e-mail would have been nice). Check in was easy; just stopped at the office and paid, received the keys and a card to open the gate. The self-contained units are behind and to the right of the entrance, near the play area, min golf, etc.

The units had two bedrooms, one with a queen and the second with two twin beds. They had a "bath room" with no bath but with a large, modern shower stall with Shower Dome (very nice addition), a vanity/basin, and a separate toilet room with another small basin. In the combination lounge/dining area there was dining table with six chairs, a flat screen TV (basic Sky channels, no DVD player), a small 3-seater sofa and 2-seater loveseat. and a heat pump. A ranch slider opens onto a small wooden covered deck/porch, with parking right outside the unit.

The units were minimally but adequately stocked, with sheets, pillows and pillowslips, electric blankets, four towels, two hand towels, face cloths; in the kitchen, there was a small refrigerator (too small for stays longer than a couple of days), electric kettle, toaster, coffee plunger (french press), electric fry pan, and hob with two electric heating elements. The usual "motel selection" of coffees and teas were present, as was a small bottle of milk in the fridge. There was the bare minimum in cookware, plates, bowls, cups, etc. No dishwasher or waste disposal, and no laundry in unit (but laundry facilities are available in the park - we did not inspect them so cannot comment).

The units were very clean and tidy, and were comfortable once we got the heat pump going. Linens and furnishings were above average for this price/category of unit. The main disappointments were no DVD players in the room or to hire, and the "store" adjacent to the park's office had a very limited selection (they did not stock paper towels or serviettes). There are two dairies nearby, but they too have limited opening hours.

All in all, excellent units and great value for the price. We have stayed at three or four other four-star motels in the area, and would choose to stay here again over any of those.

This is one of the best parks we have stayed at in New Zealand. The kitchen has excellent facilities and very clean. Amenities blocks are well maintained and there are family bathrooms as well. Plenty of sites and an assortment of on site accommodation. There is a good kids playground and the location of the park is fine. There are some planes going over but doesn't cause any problems. Staff at check in were happy and helpful.
We would stay here again and recommend this place to others. We found the price for a powered site was reasonable and good value compared to some other places we have stayed.

We got into Nelson late one night and thought this place would be okay for a night. Its in a great location on the beach, but that seems to be all that is going for it.
Our room was a cheap one- so we probably shouldnt have expected too much, but the in comparison to other places that were only a little more expensive - Tahuna Holiday Park didn't make the cut. The rooms are really outdated, and the showers and toilets are very old and frustrating with the shower taps that you need to press every 15 seconds to get the water going again. Spend another 20-30 and go somewhere else

We stayed for 3 weeks in a studio apartment, which was clean and adequate, good shower and all the facilities you need in the studio. Bed was comfy.

Planes flying over are annoying but you get used to them after awhile. Laundry facilities good and a little shop on site, which is a bit expensive but with the nearest supermarket 6mile away you be best to do a big shop.

For such a big site they could do more with it, like a cafe on site and a function room to have evening entertainment, could also have an outdoor pool etc.

You need a car when staying here as there is not much nearby and the bus stops running very early, a very very small zoo within walking distant and a water park, which is not brill. You are close to the beach though, but there are nicer beaches if you drive.

Room Tip: a studio apartment sleeps 4 and is spacious and has ensuite. there is a cooker, fridge and microwave...

Stayed here for 2 nights in early May in a campervan. We note that most of the excellent reviews have been written about the cabins.

This is a big park with security gates and LOTS of rules and signs but suppose they have to do this with so many visitors. This was the second last park we stayed in over the last 20 days and it felt the least enjoyable. Can't put a reason to it but it didn't have the 'friendly' feel to it that most other parks did.
The camp kitchen we were parked near was well equipped and had all the facilities but there were a couple of odd characters always in the kitchen who seemed to be "permanents" and gave my wife the creeps, so much so she declined to use the kitchen. Also lots of rules about not taking glass drinks into the kitchen and dining area......first we had come across this idea! It's always nice to have a glass of wine when cooking and eating. That's what holidays are for.

Then there is the airport close by with light turbo prop commuters taking off and landing over the park all day.

The park is handy to the town centre of Nelson but still not within walking distance to shops. The nearest shops and food outlets are about 2 ks up the road, bit too far to walk.

Facilities such as showers etc are very good and clean.

You are given a card to get in security gates and have to hand it in upon leaving.

It is a handy, big park but we probably wouldn't stay again. Rather be in a more smaller friendlier park.

We took a two-bedroom self-contained unit. the rooms were comfortable, well furnished and ample. The living space was also very large; cooking facilities adequate. It was a bargain at NZ$120 a night (two adults and a child), especially given the good recreation facilities for children and proximity to the beach.

One word of caution: other groups in our parties took cheaper units, including the "tourist flat". They were not nearly as good. We got the clear impression that the saving was not worth it. We suggest sticking sticking with the high-end units.

We stayed in a self-contained 2 bedroom unit. It was huge and perfect for what we wanted. The facilities were all good.
We ate in the function room three nights and although the service was excellent the food was just average.
