“Nice hotel, elegant lobby but terrible beds”
Reviewed 2 February 2014

Everything was on the up & up - clean room lots of amenities. Hotel is well located across a lovely park. I would suggest that the management spend a little extra cash on new beds. The beds are too soft as mentioned by many members of our tour group. If this is not an issue with you, you will enjoy this hotel.

I've just spent a week at a conference in this hotel, and found it very comfortable and convenient. The conference food was excellent as was the service. The conference facilities were also good. On the downside, the internet access is ridiculously expensive - you may as well just use your mobile broadband, or find an Internet cafe somewhere else.

While the food and cheffing remains a high service the decor is faded and wine list poor and charging extra for visa really! This restaurant needs to support the amazing nelson food wine and beer region and wake up!!!!!!! We loved our Japanese chef and his skills but nothing in the menu reflected nelsons amazing local seafood - disappointing as a local the Rutherford is the show piece. Come on get it together n show nelson off!!!!

On a rainy day in Nelson we were met with a warm welcome at reception. The hotel service, room and dinner at the on-site Japanese restaurant all exceeded our expectations. This is a hotel that is trying hard to offer good value accommodation and would recommend for the weary traveller.

Keep up the good work!

We were exhausted on the first night, so it was pretty easy to sleep regardless of temperature.

By the 2nd night, however, we could definitely feel the humidity in the room. When we enquired about this, the suggestion was to switch off the fan (unbeknownst to us when we checked-in, the room only had a heater unit, and no air-conditioning) as that was probably making the room warmer than necessary, and open the windows. We took the advice, however, any improvements to the temperature were negated by the increased noise from the traffic and people talking outside.

The next morning, we enquired again, and only then were we informed that only some rooms have no air-conditioning - ours being one of those. The Front Office Attendant was very helpful and offered to move us into a room with air-conditioning. Needless to say, the room was much more comfortable and we finally had a decent night's sleep - on the final night.

Room was clean, bed was comfortable, but Wi-Fi was slow and unreliable.

Stayed for three nights Dec 30 to Jan 2
The Good: Located in the town centre close to restaurants and a McDonald( saved us for lunc and breakfast)

The BAD:
1. Very expensive and slow Wi-Fi. No Wi-Fi available in the rooms; only in the lobby!
2. No lunch option. It rained for two out of three days. Had to go to McD in the rain to get lunch.
3. The outside needs a big paint job, looks really shabby
4. Over priced and over rated Japanese restaurant. They have Teppan Yaki - translation for Americans : A Hibachi Grill
5. Ditto for their seafood restaurant
7.The Bar: Repeated bad experience with a tall, rude, native bartender. I ASKED FOR A DOUBLE GIN AND SODA, HE RUDELY REPLIED " IT HAS 30 MLS THAT IS A DOUBLE"
SINCE WHEN DID 30 MLS BECOME A " DOUBLE"
8. Overall terrible

Do not recommend

Room Tip: Avoid if you can. Or go with low expectations.

Stayed here over two nights for work. Service was fantastic, best i've had in a long, long time!! There was a slight minor issue with the booking, but it was sorted, and the Staff offered compensation which was appreciated. The room was clean and modern. I was on the 7th story and my room had great views out over the Nelson Cathedral and out over the City towards the Sea. The Bathroom was spotless and had everything you needed.

The location was fantastic. The Hotel is pretty much the tallest building in Nelson, so it was easy to locate on the few times i lost my way. The Bed was comfy, and the curtains of thick, decent quality. It had a decent sized, branded television, with Sky and Freeview.

All in all a great stay, a nice place to retire to after a stressful day. Modern, Clean and fantastic staff. The Oceano Resturant was also fantastic.
