We stayed here for two nights before our bike trip from Nelson to Queenstown and we were glad we did. It was the perfect place to start our exploration of the South Island.

The house: a beautifully restored classic New Zealand home on a hillside above the bay with a huge view of the water and the mountains in the distance. Superb.

The hosts: Richard and James are natural hosts-- warm, welcoming, easy-going, and enthusiastic. We really enjoyed meeting them and they made us feel at home. Wonderful.

Our room: we had the room without a view (on the entrance level of the home) and it was just fine since we would simply walk upstairs and join the other guests on the pretty porch for cocktails and a view. Nice.

We heartily recommend Te Puna Wai Lodge.

Room Tip: See our comment above... we had the room without a view and it was fine.

We stayed in the apartment on the first floor with a fantastic porch and fabulous views of Nelson Bay. We had an excellent experience and James and Richard are great hosts. They were extremely helpful in assisting us with our plans and they served an excellent breakfast. I would highly recommend Te Puna Wai to anyone visiting Nelson.

We stayed for four nights at Te Puna Wai and it was altogether a great experience. There were 3 couples in all. The rooms were very good, especially the top floor with a stunning view of Nelson Bay. The room at the back downstairs is very good but has no view. The one at the front is super and has self catering kitchen with everything you could need. The two boys James and Richard provide a splendid breakfast each morning and are mines of information about the region as well. Nothing was too much trouble and we all highly recommend this place to any couples or small groups. As an added bonus you are within walking distance of several excellent restaurants. We ate at the Boatshed Cafe and Harbour Highlights and both were top class.

This is a magnificently well preserved property dating back to the early years of settlement of Nelson ( about 150 years ago) but with every possible comfort and modern convenience you could wish for. We stayed in the Haulashore room which had French doors to a terrace with fantastic views over the Tasman sea. The room is large and beautifully furnished with well chosen period pieces. It also has a modern small kitchen adjacent, well stocked with basic ingredients if you want to make use of the kitchen, and with complimentary drinks in the fridge - how good is that!
James and Richard are hugely hospitable and genuinely want guests to enjoy their stay at Te Puna Wai, and in Nelson. They will spend time finding out the sort of things that might interest you then suggest appropriate trips or activities that will fit for you.
Book this place - you will not regret it. It is simply beautiful.

The location, view, ambiance, comfort and character of this property would suffice for 4 (dots?), but the quality of the breakfast and solicitous conversation of James and Richard adds another. I'm sure the house has an interesting history, had its records not burned (per James). Perfectly situated between Tahunanui beach and the town centre, we hated to leave.

We've just spent 3 wonderful weeks driving around NZ. We stayed at a number of lovely B & Bs but Te Puna Wai will always be remembered as a high point. James and Richard made us feel at home, provided every comfort and convenience. Their house is elegant and welcoming with beautiful ocean views and sea breezes. The location is great with 3 really good restaurants a 10 minute walk away; it's a short drive to an amazing beach and only a half hour to the wine country. Breakfast was delicious and came with lots of excellent local information. We would probably have missed the car collection at WOW were it not for James and Richard insisting that it's a must see, and how right they were. Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer.

Room Tip: All rooms are good rooms

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights, originally we were only going to stay for one night, but we didn't want to leave. Richard and James are amazing! Full of life, information and are extremely kind and helpful. We loved our room, we loved their home. Breakfast was amazing. THey helped us plan our travels... I could go on and on. Their home is beautifully decorated. We love art and so do they! It is near everything. Short walk to the beach and to the water. Amazing views. STAY HERE!!!!! :) 5 Stars !!!!!

Room Tip: All of the rooms are good rooms. The top floor has an amazing vie and beautiful marble in the bat...
