“Fantastic hospitality, wonderful breakfasts! The personal touch.”
Reviewed 6 March 2010

We stopped here just after Christmas 2009 for two nights. Our room was on the ground floor next to the front door - other members of our party were also on the ground floor across the hall.

This is a wonderful, homely Bed & Breakfast inn. The owners, Val and Wayne go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need. In the rooms there is a vast amount of information and advice on where to go/what to do in the local area. The breakfasts are amazing. In addition to the usual toast, fruit, cereal - Wayne makes something different everyday - we had different omelettes on both days which we delicious.

The location is excellent - whilst in a quiet residential area, it's just a short 2 min walk to the shops, restaurants, pubs etc. The decor is lovely - all rooms are set out and decorated in a different style. The en-suite bathrooms are a very good size ... especially for a B & B.

Most definitely the best B & B we've stayed in.... anywhere in the world!

Feels like it is nestled in a street some way from the centre but it is a 5 minute walk.
Breakfast was great. The garden room is much better in reality than on their website (where is looks pleasant enough) - very spacious with a separate lounge area and mini kitchenette. Warmly recommended. Look out for cheaper prices on hotel search sites.

We stayed at Shelbourne Villa in January on our tour of south island. Val and Wayne made us very welcome and have a beautifull home. It was so close to the town centre and all the places to eat. The only slight down side was our room or should I say suite. We were given the garden suite which was not exactly onto the garden, but a car parking area. The rooms were very clean and well presented but we found the bedroom to be small and the sitting area dark and the suite had to be accessed via the laundry room. The breakfasts were very good.

Thank you for your lovely positive comments. There are a couple of points of clarification we would like to make for other readers:

- The Garden Suite actually has 3 entrances, one of which does open directly into Shelbourne Villa's private back garden and terrace. The back garden has seating, a large outdoor table and sun loungers for guest use.

- The main entrance does not in fact open directly on to the car park. It opens on to a pathway that is well separated from a (2 car) car park by large planter boxes and 2 meter high trelliises covered with vegetation. From memory, the vegetation had been cut right back not long before this stay to allow us to re-paint the planter boxes and trellises, so may not have been in its usual prolific state.

- The bedroom is dominated by a large King sized bed, but occupants do also have their own private lounge adjoining the bedroom, plus kitchenette and good sized walk in closet/storage cupboard. Over-all floor area of the Garden Suite is 35m2 (377 square feet).

- Shelbourne Villa was originally constructed in the 1920s, so like most construction of that era, you do need lights on, on dull days. However, we believe there is a good range of lighting options from bright to soft, depending on your preference (but for environmental reasons we do use low energy light bulbs which take a couple of minutes to reach normal operating light levels. This means it can initially appear dull for a very short period when the main lights are first switched on)

- As we mentioned earlier, the Garden Suite has 3 entrances. It is personal choice which you use, but access via the rear entrance, which has the guest laundry alcove off it, rather than via Shelbourne Villa's main entrance, is the quickest (by about 45 seconds) and most direct route to the dining room and breakfast.

Wayne is a wonderful cook. The rooms are nice and there is a lounge for guests as well. Warm generous people, and warm (centrally heated which is rare in NZ) rooms.

My husband, daughter, son in law, and I loved our stay at this inn. The hosts, Val and Wayne, could not have been nicer, the home and gardens are beautiful, and the location is perfect- close enough to walk to town but in a quiet residential location. We enjoyed our rooms, the home cooked breakfasts, playing cards in the garden, and lounging with a complimentary glass of port in the comfy living room after dinner.at one of the many restaurants in town. There is plenty to do in Nelson and the surrounding areas..

The property is located on a quiet street but within easy walking distance to town and restaurants. We stayed for two nights in a front room on the first floor with a large window overlooking the garden. The room was immaculate and beautifully appointed with rimu wood floors. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. The room had a desk area that was separated from the bedroom and bathroom.

The bathroom was large and clean also with plenty of room for laying out toiletries. It also had a complete bathroom amenities package with shampoo, bath products and a hair dryer. Bedroom and bathroom were refreshed each day.

Breakfast was plentiful, including cold cereals and fruit as well as a cooked breakfast to order. Unfortunately, we never met the owners as they were away for a wedding, but we did meet their son and several friends who were filling in. All were very friendly and helpful with recommendations. They keep a display of many brochures with information about local doings.
There was a computer in the lounge that allowed us to check e-mail and access the internet free of charge.

One of the best recommendations we got was to go to the local market on Saturday morning on our way out of town. We found wonderful locally grown food and lavender products as well as art work and craft items.

It was ironic that Nelson is supposed to be one of the sunniest places in NZ and it rained while we were there, but that in no way detracted from a lovely experience. We highly recommend Shelbourne Villa.
