Owner description: Specialties The One Ring - The Lord of the Rings Ring for The Hobbit Manufacturing Jeweller Diamond Engagement & Wedding Rings Platinum - Gold - SilverValuations, Repairs, & Remodelling Ready to Wear & To Order Custom & Traditional Design Gold Buyers Since 1968 the Jens Hansen Gold and Silversmith workshop in Nelson, New Zealand has been making jewellery of uncompromising beauty. Diamond engagement rings, custom design wedding jewellery, dress rings, bracelets, pendants, brooches and silverware that offer pure contemporary lines and sculptural elegance have become the trademarks of the Jens Hansen workshop. All the jewellery is handcrafted, original, precious and crafted 'to be worn'. This simple philosophy rewards us with creative pieces that we all can embrace, afford and love, and was also the reason Peter Jackson asked Jens Hansen to design and make the ring depicted on screen as The One Ring™ for his film version of J. R. R. Tolkien's famous The Lord of the Rings™books. History Established in 1968 The Jens Hansen Gold and Silversmith Workshop was borne from passion of creativity and experimentation. The first Nelson workshop, set up in 1968, was in the front room of the family home at 8 Alton Street. This quickly became a centre for the local arts community, where Jens's talent, energy, enthusiasm, and outspoken personality drew people in from all over the world, and where Jens trained, worked with and influenced many of New Zealand's leading contemporary jewellers.Meet the Business Owner: Halfdan H.Halfdan is Jens Hansen's elder son, and has been director of the store for the last five years. He is committed to continuing his father's legacy, particularly when it comes to the Movie Ring that his father Jens and brother Thorkild worked on for the original The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.

If you've only time to visit one jeweller in Nelson, it has to be Jens Hansen. Sadly, Mr Jens Hansen passed away before he was able to have his connections to LOTR recognised on the big screen, but his spirit lives on through his sons and the charming staff who made the process of buying jewellery a thoroughly pampering experience. Seeing through my disguise as a dishevelled backpacker, they allowed me to try on as many rings, bracelets and pendants as I wanted to, opened all the cabinets and made thoughtful suggestions to help me choose some beautiful pieces. I spent a total of 2 hours there, this is a serious purchase experience, so leave any unappreciative baggage behind. (They can always give out their credit card details over the phone later!). The LOTR connection was not mentioned once. They don't need to, but you can have see the actual 'stunt ring' that they keep in the shop. This is jewellery that you'll want to hand down to your grandchildren. Simply, a beautiful, beautiful place.

Tucked away in Selwyn Place in Nelson, and a short stroll from the main shopping area, is a treasure trove of beautifully crafted jewellery. Best known as the creator of the One ring for the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Jens Hansen shop has much more to offer besides. If you are looking for unique well crafted solid pieces which will stand the pace of time then this is the shop to visit. In addition, should you possess a gemstone, here you can chose a unique setting within which to set it. Halfdan, Martine and indeed all the staff demonstrate a love of their work and are more than happy to give of their time and advice in choosing the perfect piece. Definitely worth a visit and believe me you'll get endless pleasure from wearing a piece of jewellery from Jens Hansen!

If I ever get the opportunity to travel half a day into the future (I live in England) I will make time to visit the Jens Hansen workshop so that I can personally thanks Halfdan, one of the sons that is decorating their late father's memory with wreaths of flowers, for having overseen the forging and crafting of, in 18 carat yellow gold, the most beautiful One Ring imaginable! It has real weight and prescence and lifts my mood each time I glance down at it. To order and collect a Ring such as this in person would be a vacation experience never to be forgotten.
Denby.
