Stayed for business last week, hosts very very friendly and knowledgable about the area around Nelson. Facilities in the room were first rate, would highly recommend. Quite a friendly bar across the road, worth a visit

We had booked the Boutique Motel for a planned extended trip to New Zealand from the United States. This trip was to be an opportunity for my Dad who was stationed in New Zealand 50 years ago with the United States Navy to share the country of New Zealand with his family. 3 days prior to the trip my Dad was rushed to the hospital and had to have emergency surgery along with a diagnosis of Stage 3 colon cancer. This very unexpected and very devastating circumstances caused all of us to have to cancel our entire trip. This was a very difficult time for all of us. I had 14 separate hotels booked along with many other tours, excursions and transportations. Every vendor I dealt with was gracious, understanding and extremely accommodating to our very unfortunate circumstances EXCEPT the Boutique Motel in Nelson. They refused to refund my 2 night stay. They asked me to not cancel with the booking agent I had made the reservation with and asked me to work directly with them for them to try and rebook the room. They did not want their rating with Booking.com to be affected. This room was booked over a holiday weekend during high season, a time when they easily could have filled the room with someone else. After multiple emails back and forth, I did as they requested and by protecting their rating it cost me no refund. I am very disappointed that this property and its owner put the "mighty dollar" above good customer relations. We are hoping to rebook our vacation in the next 6 months when my dad is healthy enough again to travel. We will reschedule with each of New Zealand's gracious hosts who treated us with compassion and understanding and look forward to experiencing the hospitality of New Zealand. However we will not be giving any of our business to the Boutique Motel who's only reputation was to take advantage of our "hard times."

Readers of Trip Advisor,
The 5Griswalds were clients of a 3rd party internet booking site.
There were a choice of options when they booked - they chose a cheap "non refundable" booking option with the conditions set down on the 3rd party site rather than the option of a booking which could be cancelled.
We attempted to help in the only way open to us thereby saving these people well over half the costs of their booking.
Sometimes our best is not good enough and for this we can only apologise.
For prospective guests reading this please make your accommodation requests direct with the provider of your choice to avoid any type of misunderstandings.

The owners were friendly and helpful, the room was really well maintained, clean and with nice decor and it is set well back from the busy road. Definitely a boutique motel. The only downsides is that the motel is a long way from Nelson CBD and the rooms are small.

Dear Boilingfrogger,
Thank you for your thoughts on your stay with us. We are happy you enjoyed your stay with us.
For future guests information the Unit you booked was a compact Standard Studio which is our most economically priced unit. They are delightful units with all the amenities required whilst away from home. These rooms are perfect for a single guest staying for any length of time or for a couple staying one or two nights. For longer stays we do have a variety of larger units. This being the reason we like to discuss with prospective guests what their requirements are so that all expectations can be met. When guests book direct by phone I am only too happy to recommend the appropriate unit for their stay.
We hope the rest of your holiday was just as enjoyable as it was in Nelson.

The room was nice-well decorated, clean and spacious. The flowers outside were gorgeous. But it is far away from Nelson city center and I think for that reason is a little pricey. Internet has a limit and we were warned about it)))If you do stay here I advise to check out the park and the historic house that's near the church and to the left from hotel. It was a nice walk.

Dear Marina,
Thank you for your review. It is lovely that you appreciated the Unit you booked and the floral display we have here.It is amazing how flowers can lift the soul.
There are two points that you mention which need clarifying. The free WiFi we offer here is basically unlimited but it is pointed out to guests that it is not to be abused by downloading movies or surfing through or to unsavoury sites. The law here in New Zealand can be quite strict for accommodation suppliers in that the Hotel / Motel management are held as being responsible for what their guests download. For guests who use the internet for Skyping, internet, mail, Facebook etc this is not a concern. This is the only limit put on guests use.
The other point you mention is the distance the Motel is from the City Centre. We are approximately 8 - 10 minutes drive depending on the traffic. Not far at all unless you are walking. As for pricing, this intrigued us so we did a little investigating and came up with the following. On the third party booking site you booked through, a motel in the city centre, similar age as this Motel, staying in a Standard Studio Unit costs $140+, staying 'near' the beach costs $145+, central to Nelson & Richmond,(the Boutique Motel) $122, further out towards and in Richmond costs $135+.
Therefore, we congratulate you on finding a modern motel with sensible rates which is how we advertise ourselves. Additionally, if you had booked direct through our website you would have found that for 2 or more nights stay there is additional discounting. Thereby lowering room rates even further.

A boutique motel sounds like an oxymoron, nut comes true in this property. It is a motel, no doubt, but done up and maintained in a very loving manner with all kinds of small touches. The room is very spacious, and so is the bathroom, even though the bathroom has no bath or shower stall. Instead the shower area (quite large) is curtained off. Everything in the bathroom is sparkling white and squeaky clean, with instructions for numerous dos and donts, including how to remove your makeup. Thank goodness, I did not have to worry about that one!

Wifi was fast and reliable. The location is a few kms away from Nelson, but just a 10 minute ride into town. It is on a very quiet street off the main road, and there is no traffic noise. The only peeve I have, like all accommodations in NZ, is that it is way overpriced.

Dear Zen Healer,
I am trying to place you amongst our guests but as we have been so busy this summer I am struggling to do this.( and I am getting older...the memory is not what it used to be ) However we thank you for taking time during your holidays to write a review about the Boutique Motel.
The Unit you are trying to describe is one of our Access Units. It is as you say sparkling clean and spacious.
I am sorry that you think New Zealand is an expensive place to visit. It is high season at this time of the year with many people travelling.
Enjoy the rest of your time within our beautiful country.

We stayed 4 nights for an event in Nelson and found the Boutique Motel to be much nicer than other Nelson motels we'd stayed at in the past. Our room was very comfortable, nicely decorated and well maintained, much better than the institutional feeling of many NZ motels.

We had a spa studio room at the back of the upper floor. Wireless internet access was spotty, but the wired connection for laptops was excellent. The whole motel is quiet, a big plus for us. The Stoke location is a little further out from central Nelson than the airport-area motels, but offers the convenience of a good selection of shops (including both New World and Countdown markets) and cafes just across the street.

My wife especially loved the makeup mirror and heat lamps in the bathroom, and even a candle for setting the mood while relaxing in the tub. No heat pump, but shouldn't be necessary for moderate Nelson temperatures.

Room Tip: Upper floor have nicer views and privacy, as long as you don't have any problem with stairs. And...

We stayed 3 nights so we could tour the area and found it to be very convenient to Nelson without the high prices. Exceptionally nice, modern rooms with daily service. Very close to food shops and restaurants. The owners are extremely charming and helpful. Don't miss this fantastic value in the Nelson area. We would have stayed longer if we had the time! Michael and Tina, Denver, CO

Room Tip: All the rooms looked nice!
