Most motels in NZ are featureless and functional rather than "charming" or cosy. To a certain extent the Palms is like that, but to a very high standard. It's probably the most central in Nelson. You can walk to the city restaurants etc and to transport. The rooms are larger than most and have a "clean airy" feel. The propieters had a "go the extra mile" approach to service.

Despite being near a major intersection the rooms were quiet and dark. The bed and other facilities were all of top quality.

Stumbled across this place late on a sunday and glad we did. Warm welcome from the manageress who gave us the key to room 26 to take a look. It was a very pleasant room with a balcony--most upstairs rooms on that side of the motel havee a separate balcony and altho it overlooks the parking it is pleasant.
With full kitchen facilties and a Woolworth within 50 metres, it was cheap and convenient to cater. We didnt use the small pool but it looked clean and enticing. The centre of town is easily walkable and all in all we would thoroughly recommend this place--its great value for money
Only downside is $15NZ per day internet

We stopped here just after new year, good value for money, we had two studios which connected therefore two bathrooms, which helped with two teenagers. There is an outdoor heated pool. The rooms were cleaned everyday. The beds and pillows were very comfy. I would recommend this motel for anyone with children or anyone who wanted the convenience of being close to town. It was quiet even though it was close to town. We would definately stop at this motel again and we have stopped in a few different places in Nelson.

I travel a lot and only write reviews when there is something very positive, or very negative to report. I arrived late at the Palms and paid for my room. When I walked in, the whole apartment was filled with fumes.
The motel had been redone, the bathroom/jacuzzi was, for example, brandnew. There were six doors in the room/apartment, and these, as well as all door / window frames had been freshly painted with a metal paint.
This was not oil paint, or innocent latex paint, and I am very surprised that it is even legal to use such a product in a lodging facility. I am more surprised that this motel gives no second thought to exposing their guests to these fumes.

Opening all windows did not help. Due to late arrival, I was not able to look for another motel that night. I would not have stayed if I'd been a bit more flexibel time wise. While this situation is regrettable, as there had obviously been efforts towards updating the place, there is no excuse for being so inconsiderate to your guests and use such chemicals, in such quantities. The hotel will probably answer that the 'smell' goes away in a few days. I counter by saying that this kind of paint has no business being used inside, and on such large surfaces to boot.

We stayed here 3 nights on a month tour of New Zealand. The location is good, walkable to centre and good base for Able Tasman. Our room was very dark , with dark grey/green/brown furnishings. On getting into bed the first night, we found the sheets did not look particularly clean and were very creased. It was too late to mention this at reception so we got into bed wondering who had been in before. I did ask as politely as possible the next morning if perhaps the sheets had been forgotten when cleaning the room. I was told that the cleaners take the sheets out of the tumble dryer and leave them somewhere until they are needed without folding them.
The rate of $6 per hour for the internet and $8 for wash and dry cycle of laundry (cold water only) was the most expensive of the motels we used.

We stayed here for two nights - en route to Abel Tasman coastal track and again when we finished our walk. The Kiwis really know how to do motels and this was no exception. The owners were really helpful and let us leave our luggage in their garage while we went tramping and gave us good local information. There is a big supermarket very close by - seems to be open all hours, even Sunday evenings.

Upstairs rooms have a balcony, but only a few are private (due to doubling as a route to other rooms) whereas most downstairs rooms have French windows onto the car park. Very close to supermarket (but not noisy as a result) and only a few minutes walk to the centre of Nelson. If you are staying anywhere in or near Nelson do not miss the World of Wearable Art and Collectible Cars a few miles south on SH6 – the wearable art way exceeded expectations.
