Description: Bacco is the Roman God of Wine, Bacco Restaurant and Wine Bar changed its ownership and name from Café Affair in October 2016. We are a premium wine bar/restaurant with an Italian/European spin to our dishes. We are all about fresh, local ingredients where possible and we have a food matching our premium wines philosophy. Bacco has a wine club and holds Degustation dinners bi-monthly.

We are fans of restaurants with stone grill cooking (the one in Tekapo is a fine example how it should be done). However this time in Nelson it was disappointing. My husband and I met an old friend for dinner there and that was a special occasion for us. We ordered stone grills meals of prawns and scallops. However our meals looked nothing like a picture on the website would suggest. What we've got was mostly skewers with prawns and three scallops per portion. On my plate those scallops had no yellow parts in them, just 1/2 of each scallops so that was 1.5 of greyish looking scallops in total. I would agree with previous review that scallops were rubbery after sitting on a hot stone and prawns were tough and dry. The sauce (just one) served in a little bowl with them had a strong smell of powdered ginger and certainly had no fresh ingredients in it. It was also very thin and watery. The portion of chips was much smaller than the picture on the website would suggest. The vegetables - two pieces of carrot and 2 brussel sprouts were soft and cold. The wine we chose was very good but hugely over-priced. Also we had a dessert which my husband and I shared and were not really impressed with it as it was mostly whipped cream with a small piece of torte. The service was not bad but young waiters were very inexperienced and rushed the service with - "are you ready to order?" - every 2 minutes when we only were sitting and having a look at the menu.

If you are having a stone cooked meal then I think it's value for money, but don't expect anything special from the other meals.

We were looking for a restaurant in Nelson for a good steak. Cafe Affair did not disappoint. The steak was delicious and the accompaniments were each a special flavor. The Cafe Affair has a nice decor and the staff were a delight to deal with. All in all a top evening. The one down side is that when researching on the internet for a restaurant Cafe Affair did not show, probably because the name is "Cafe" but the premises and food are certainly restaurant quality.

Dropped in for a drink, placed my order at the bar and sat down relaxed. But no the waitress came to take our order again, this time included a snack order. Sat and relaxed over a Grenough savvie - but no the music was blaring in our ear so went upstairs and settled and relaxed over our drink.

But where was our snack - followed up with staff and tripled the snack order (hungry by now), and relaxed into our second glass of wine (House wine -Grenough no longer available). But where was our snack - Oh sorry, we will give your a free drink if you just wait 5 more mins?

Who could resist a free drink, waited and devoured the snack and then stumbled out of the bar having drunk too much and slightly miffed.

A table by the window in the beautiful sunshine, friendly efficient service and food which was faultless. Drinks were served quickly and great recommendations were given on local wines!
We enjoyed sharing fresh calamari to start followed by on the stone dining of fresh prawns and scollaps and lamb skewers - mmmmh! Will definitely return when back in nelson next.
The only negative was people were waiting for tables by the bar and as soon as we had finished eating we felt like we were constantly being watched and couldn't relax letting our food settle and finishing our drinks as someone obviously wanted our table. As soon as we stood up to leave a lady came straight over to sit at our table, which wasn't very professional as a waiter should seat people!
