We were tempted to eat at the Tides by a Grabone voucher. We had eaten there a couple of times several years earlier, dinner and at a breakfast event, and been very disappointed with the food and service so had given up on this venue. We decided to give it another try as the offer seemed genuine and the location is one of the best in the city, with beautiful river views. What an amazing improvement! We were immediately impressed by attentive service, front of house and table. Then the food arrived: not the meal we had ordered but first an amuse bouche of light salmon mousse in its delicate pastry shell, compliments of the chef. What an opening and a fine dining touch! We proceeded to our meal and it continued to impress: perfectly cooked steak, seared salmon fillet, Dauphinoise potatoes, individual side platters of attractively presented, seasonal vegetables, three different kinds, all fresh and full of flavour. Everything was delicious and portions generous. How pleasing to find good local wine, Tasman Bay Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, to accompany these dishes. We decided to share a dessert, spoilt for choice by the dessert menu, and opted for a chocolate selection: white and dark chocolate mousse with berry compote and ice cream. Again, it came on a platter, beautifully presented with extra chocolate decorations, clearly hand-made, tasting of good quality chocolate. All through the meal we could not help comparing each aspect with previous experiences. It was a delightful evening, we lingered to enjoy the meal, drink and ambience and complimented staff as we left. We have spoken with friends who have given it a try and commented just as we have done with surprise and great pleasure. We have been back since and eaten from the a la carte menu and left equally impressed. The standard set menus offer excellent choice and value. The management has changed radically all the restaurant offers. The chefs, front of house and table staff must all be complimented. We recommend this restaurant as one to savour and enjoy.
