Absolutely loved it, lovely owner, great location. So quiet! You do need a car and it is quite hard to find but that makes it all the more satisfying when you arrive! Definitely recommended.

Wainui lodge was our first stop on our 17-day trip through New Zealand. I'd never gone backpacking before or stayed in a hostel, so I was pretty nervous to experience my first non-hotel lodging. Wainui lodge, however, put all of my worries at rest. Ron and his wife run the lodge, and they are two of the nicest people. They definitely represent the friendly Kiwis you'll meet all over New Zealand. My boyfriend and I decided to pick up our rental car and drive up to Wainui Lodge right after landing at Auckland International Airport. Considering it was our first time driving on the left side of the road AND our first experience on the winding, narrow roads on New Zealand's North Island...deciding to start a 4-5 hour journey to Russell at 5:00pm was a bad idea. I strongly suggest that if you are driving yourself, you start your journey to Russel (especially to Wainui Lodge) with plenty of daylight to spare. Do not underestimate the effect lack-of-light and possible rain can have on your drive up North. Wainui Lodge is extremely charming! The rooms (we stayed in one of two private doubles) are clean and have great views of the bay in the backyard, and the rest of the lodge is well-kept and cozy. Ron, the lodge owner, is enthusiastic to help travelers plan their New Zealand experience. He printed off weather reports for us and was able to recommend other hostels/specialty lodging around the North Island. The kitchen is well-equipped and clean. There are board games, books, and loads of pamphlets available in the living room. Although, the lodge can be difficult to find...its location is perfect in relation to the other attractions in Russell and the Bay of Islands. I highly recommend staying at Wainui Lodge!!

p.s. Be sure to try a restaurant called Kamakura in Russel. It has outdoor seating and the restaurant is also open to the beautiful view of the bay. The food was delicious: I had a calamari salad, and my boyfriend had these delicious mussels in a white wine sauce served with chips. It's a little expensive for a backpacker's budget, but it's well worth it. If you're still around Russel, make the small hike up to Long Beach. It's STUNNING!

Room Tip: Make sure you drive there with plenty of daylight!
