“The Duke of Marlborough”
Reviewed 23 May 2014

The "Duke" is a fantastic respite while journeying New Zealand. Enjoying green lipped mussels and a pitcher of beer in the No. 1 liquor licensed establishment in New Zealand was a treat not to be missed. Mussels are the largest ever seen and the beer is great but the service by the staff is nothing less than excellent. The ladies even enjoyed the ciders, but the mussels were a bit much for them, so fish and chips satisfied their tastes. Great time was had by all.

“Preferred the Gables Restaurant”
Reviewed 23 May 2014 via mobile

We did not stay here but had dinner. The entrees and mains were fine but the dessert disappointing, although it could just be a matter of taste. The service was rather perfunctory, the waiter not being able to hide his lack of interest. It's all very well to ask " is everything ok" every once in a while, but to walk away immediately without a word each time when we answered just came across as cold.

The decor is lovely though, and the atmosphere good. This is the closest I've ever been to a real old fashioned English style pub in NZ.

We preferred the Gables restaurant just a few metres away, where the food was excellent and the service friendly.

“Day trippers delight.”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

On our last day of a three day holiday we boarded the ferry from Paihia to Russell. Having spent a lovely couple of hours exploring the town, including a hike to the top of Flagstaff Hill. We decide, as publicans ourselves, we had to eat here.
The hotel has a lot to offer, the atmospheric interior charms. The walls cleverly hung with pictures upon pictures of the hotel and Russells past. Worn in leather sofas invite but its super sunny and we take a seat outside with a view of the water.
The staff are great, friendly and well informed. We decide on the Beer battered fish and chips with wasabi pea mash. A shandy for me and a beer for my husband. The meal arrives with great speed and we add a couple of glasses of wine to enjoy with the fish. The fish is fresh gurnard and the batter fantastic, light and crisp. Hand cut chips served in a small fry basket, the presentation good enough to grace a magazine cover. Pea mash is a nice change from salad and the tartare sauce so delicious we ask for more. Too full for pudding we opt for a couple of coffees.
I could have lingered for longer enjoying the balmy weather but we watch our ferry arrive and ask for the bill. This place is reasonably priced for the quality of our meal, the service was attentive and the location brilliant. Definately recommend for a leisurely lunch.
