Stayed one night here in room 4 on 23/02/12 whilst touring NZ and splashed out!. Great room with balcony facing the sea with views and everything you need, worth the cost for something special. A great selection of teas in the room, nice touch. Russell and Bay of Islands a must for visitors to N.Z. Good evening meal. If sea food lovers, call at the oyster farm on the left after leaving the car ferry, a dozen oysters for $NZ10, grab a bottle of Sav or your fancy and sit on the balcony of room 4 looking over the bay and enjoy.

Room Tip: Spash out and go for room 4!

This was our first stop on a short trip to New Zealand. Some friends had recommended the Bay of Islands as a good place for a bit of R and R after the long flight from the UK and the trip from Auckland to Russell was spectacular. We'd been told that Pahia was a bit commercial and that Russell was a quieter spot, this was certainly the case! We thought that the setting was amazing and really was just what the doctor ordered. The hotel has an excellent location and we enjoyed sitting on the deck watching the world go by. The food was good (not amazing by any means and the continental breakfast was quite poor in comparison to their lunch and dinner fayre) and the wine selection was excellent. All the staff were very friendly and only too keen to help us make the most of our time in the area. Our room was quite small at the back of the hotel but was clean and comfortable. However, I thought it was a little expensive for what it was.

Thanks for the feedback and we are glad that you enjoyed yourself in Russell and The Duke. It’s a shame you didn’t enjoy your complementary continental breakfast – comparing breakfast to lunch and dinner (which which we get many compliments about) probably would see breakfast come out third! Having reviewed our breakfast we are happy that the range of cereals, pastries, breads, fresh fruit, yogurt, specialist tea, coffee and juices is a great start to the day! For less than $200 a night including breakfast, free parking and wifi with a waterfront location we know we offer value for money.

Have eaten a few times at this establishment and has always been pleasant, staff always friendly although seem to consistently get things wrong with orders/drinks/bills! Generous portions and food always tasty, however seem to be lacking good desserts. Made me realise how important it is to have a good dessert to round off the whole meal. This wont stop me going back though, great atmosphere....and look forward to maybe seeing some tasty desserts in the future!

Cosy room - yep - it was cosy all right. In fact so cosy that you couldn't put a suitcase anywhere - not even room on the floor.... The bathroom was so small you knocked your elbows when you dried yourself and had to close the bathroom door to sit on the loo. The room though was clean and tidy and had recently been painted, but they missed the wardrobe which had peeling wallpaper and the light switch covers were yellow from age. It would have cost 20 cents each to replace these with clean white ones. The rest of the hotel, while old was lovely and charming and the staff friendly and helpful. For $165 per night this was not good value. The front of the hotel was lovely and clean but the back stairs that we were told to use to the car park looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months. The carpet was filthy and the bannisters and shelves down the stairs covered in dead insects, dust and cobwebs.

Room Tip: Make sure you don't get a "cosy" room unless you are prepared for a very, very small r...

Thanks for taking the time to feedback about your stay at The Duke of Marlborough Hotel. We do advertise these rooms as small but cosy, and the price for the location and time of year reflects this. We feel we have been fair on its description and don’t describe it as anything else. There is a queen bed, wardrobe for clothes and luggage, an en-suite bathroom, tea & coffee making facilities, fridge and flat screen TV with sky. The price also includes a continental breakfast for 2 and unlimited wifi. We have been doing renovations across the hotel since we bought in May 2010 and will me making progress to finish of these rooms during this winter. I can only apologise for the exit stairwell, this has now been rectified and a process put in place to ensure it doesn’t happen again. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

The venue is old but presents well with period decor and excellent bar and restaurant facilities. We had a wedding at the venue an dwould like to ay that the staff went out of there way to make verything work well. catering to the allergies of several guests and making sure everything ran to time.

Room Tip: If you wantth eseaview view ask for the front rooms

The hotel is situated in a beautiful location with excelent views of the bay. We recently had a lovely seaview room with a balcony. We were very happy with the room, the view, and the friendly, helpful staff. The restaurant was excellent and the service was very good. We would definitely stay there again and have many happy memories of the Bay of Islands and the Duke of Marlborough hotel.

Room Tip: Choose a seaview room if possible.

We recently stayed at The Duke of Marlborough for a few nights, we also held our Wedding reception in the private function rooms & terrace.

Our room was as we had anticipated, good size, clean & tidy. The recent upgrade has really made the difference, feels really fresh but also retains the unique character that the building has throughout. We thought it had retained it's original heritage yet also bringing it up to a level of

We really enjoy the food at The Duke of Marlborough, each time we have had a meal. lunch & dinner have always been quality, with the fish & chips being a real highlight, not to mention the chowder!
Breakfast had a good variety of selections, fresh each morning & followed up with a decent brew of coffee.

With regards to our Wedding Reception, what can we say, the whole experience in dealing with Bridget & the team at The Duke of Marlborough was unbelievable.
During the planning stage (most via email), all our options were met & no request was too much trouble, otherwise a solution was offered to us.
We were offered plenty of assistance, advice for on the day & leading up to the event, which was all extremely useful.

In the final stages of coordinating, all aspects were taken care off, we were well informed along the way & advised of any issues that had arisen. We were also offered the use of the private dining room which added a new & useful dimension for the reception, was perfect for our favours & guest book & coffees.
We also had the use of the terrace on the road front for the guests, which creates a great atmosphere, amazing view of the beach, wharf & ferries passing by.

The day of the event couldn't have been any better, everything was perfect. All the instructions, preparation was followed & presented exactly as we had imagined. The service of the staff was outstanding, the meals were absolutely amazing, this was reiterated by all the guests who raved about the food & service throughout the night.

During our stay there were various small things that were done in & around the hotel which we didn't think of. It is the small things that really make the difference & we really appreciated them.

We cannot say enough about how good our experience was at The Duke of Marlborough, the hotel stay before & after the Wedding reception was fantastic & the Reception was a real highlight, was a truly memorably time for us, family & friends all loved it. The Duke team put on an amazing function & it's a credit to Bridget, Anton & their team.

We would definitely recommend staying at The Duke of Marlborough & We would DEFINITELY recommend hosting your wedding reception at The Duke of Marlborough.

Thanks again!!

Room Tip: choose a ocean room, great view & can here the water lapping on the beach all night... really re...
