“Superb Service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 June 2012

This small hotel is an excellent place to stay in the picturesque seaside town of Russell. The hotel staff, in particular Viki, responded to my email inquiries with such promptness that I decided to stay at the Duke in Russell versus another hotel in Pahia. They helped me book a cruise tour as well. We stayed in the bungalow which was a great choice for my family. It was clean and had a nice kitchen. It is older and needs some updating. Location cannot be beat as the wharf is right in front. The complimentary breakfast was excellent and very much appreciated. We hope to visit again.

Room Tip: Bungalow is a great option for families.

We stayed (2 adults and a 3 yr old) here in May 2012. The hotel is a great base to explore Russell and further afield. The food was very good, albeit a little neveau cuisine for my liking. The hosts were also very good and vey attentive. Being a smaller hotel allows a bit more personality. Location is excellent, being only a stones throw from the sea and foot ferry across to Pahia.
Our room was sea facing and very nice.
Would we stay again.. Yes, for sure..

Room Tip: Sea facing.

An older type hotel but in a beautiful position on the shoreline in the Bay of Islands, in close proximity to significant events in New Zealand's history. The hotel itself is steeped in history with the first Hotel License ever issued in NZ ,on the wall. Very good service and a very popular restaurant and bar overlooking the harbour

Room Tip: Need to be in a front room. Room 4 is on the corner with its own deck overlooking the harbour

Very nice stay. Amazing location, gorgeous views. Restaurant and bar high standard. Very clean rooms. nice beds.
walls are paper thin, so can be noisy at night when you're trying to sleep!

Room Tip: Standard rooms are quite small, but adequate if you are not staying for long. The deluxe rooms are...

Thank you for staying at the Duke, we appreciate you have included us in your travel plans.
As per your tips, although we have pride in all our rooms we do advise spending a little bit extra to treat yourself in one of our waterfront suits. The views and little extras you get are definitely worth it.
We are sorry to hear you did not have the best of sleeps. Russell is so quiet at night that it may take a few days for some people to get used to it.

The hotel prides itself on its history, but some work is now needed to update the furnishings and brighten the somber dining room. Our room, which faced the water, was spacious enough (considering the price) but the hotel as a whole needs updating and staff who know what's happening. Our son in the US had arranged to use his credit card to pay for his Dad's 75th birthday dinner at the Duke, but at the end of the meal the bill was presented to my husband, which it should not have been--I had to jump up from the table and talk to the person in charge who remembered suddenly that this was the case. So part of the fun was spoiled due to lack of attention to detail, which is a problem throughout the hotel, such as staff not being aware of activities in town. Goodness, it's such a small town--surely they should be aware of the boat rides and such! So in sum, I found it not very warm and in need of some rethinkng.

We appreciate you taking the time to feedback. The hotel has been under new management since May 2010 and we have been spending a lot of time and money renovating the hotel so am surprised to find the comment that the hotel is a bit tired as we get great compliments on the changes we have made. Being an old Victorian building built in the late 1800’s and being New Zealand’s first hotel licence does make our hotel quite unique but not always to everyone’s tastes in terms of décor and style. The Duke respects in heritage but has been renovated to suit the modern day traveller.

It is our normal practice that before charging to a credit card we would have someone at the table check the bill to check for accuracy.

We spend a lot of time with our staff regarding activities and such at the hotel. Our reception staff are especially skilled in providing information about Russell and the Bay of Islands area and you can book trips through them. In the reception lobby there is a lot of information and this is also covered in your room compendium. I am sorry on this instance you didn’t find the information you wanted.
