We arrived unannounced in Russell and headed straight to the Duke. We ordered lunch and inquired about the availability of a room. The only room available was one with a sea view - a little more pricey than we'd hope for, but well worth it. Great accommodation, friendly staff and good food. Loved the ambiance and style.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a sea view.

This was the third time we have stayed here over many years & found it just as charming as always. Staff were helpful & friendly, food great. Oysters magnificent! Get off the ferry pick a seat out front in the sun at The Duke of Marlborough, order your wine & food, & don't move until you have to leave. Wander to your room & repeat & repeat ... We stayed in a basic room upstairs this visit, it opened on to a sunny deck, with outdoor setting, with lovely decor. The weather was beautiful, so the doors could remain open. No air-conditioning, so air flow it was. Can get warm through the night in the small rooms but it was very adequate. The shower was the best I used in NZ, in fact better than home. Double bed was not the best for comfort. Yes, this was a room above the kitchen & I thought we were sitting above the engine on a plane. This however stopped when the kitchen finished. Then the chimes of the bottles from the nights bar & restaurant entering the bin .... & all was silent. All in all, we'd return again any time & still choose to stay here.

Room Tip: Look at the pictures of rooms on Trip Advisor & ask to see them on arrival.

We stayed two nights and were charmed by the quality of service and location, and overwhelmed by the friendly and helpful staff who assisted us to get the best out of our stay. The location cannot be described in mere words - you have to go there!

The balcony room was wonderful - a quiet spot to reflect on the days activities with a drink, before moving on to the verandah for dinner and watching the sun set over the water.

There was no fitness centre - walking up and down the Russell hills is all the fitness support you need!

Room Tip: Balcony rooms provide an outdoor sitting space for quite reflection or a convivial drink before dinn...

My wife and I stayed one night at the Duke of Marlborough as we were attending a wedding in Russell. The staff were great, they even gave us an early check in so we could get ready before the wedding. Right on the waters edge over looking the bays - Highly recommend this place

We stayed here for two nights to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. As we checked out we booked for next year.
The Duke has the most beautiful location, meters away from the Bay of Islands. If you are going to visit this part of NZ, this is the place to stay.
The waterfront room we had was spacious, with a separate toilet. The bed was great! Marginally noisy over the bar, but everything wrapped up before midnight.
Dan the musician who played a set for 3 hours both nights was fantastic.
Although breakfasts were quite basic, dinners were fantastic. Silver service, a great menu; very seafood based, but the lamb we had was just divine.
The service was of the highest quality at all times.
The Duke of Marlborough is now our place.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a waterfront room.

A beautiful hotel full of history looking out over the South Pacific................could it get any better?
We arrived late in the afternoon and opted for a small cosy room for our one night stay. Crisp white bed linen, beautiful fluffy towels, free Wifi and TV, luxurious toiletries and a great choice of beverages greeted us in our lovely room. We dined in their restaurant in the evening and had beautifully cooked fresh produce from an extensive menu. The table linen and flat-ware were a pleasure to use.The continental breakfast was included in the price and consisted of a huge selection of cereals, juices, yoghurts and bread. It is a picturesque setting, with the ocean just a few metres from the door. The staff are delightful and extremely helpful. All in all, excellent value for money and well worth a visit.

My hubby and I stayed here 12 years ago when we got married . Back then it was rather dated and drab. What a transformation !! They have done such a great job and updating the whole property while still retaining all the character of the hotel .

We had a waterfront room which was worth the extra $$ . Great little touches like fluffly bath robes, plunger coffee, luxury tea etc .

Unfortunately we only stayed for one night so we didn't have a chance to go through the whole menu but what we had for dinner was amazing - beautiful NZ mussels and then the house specialty of roast shoulder of lamb - the lamb was superb - just fell off the bone . We were so full after all this food but did manage to share a banoffie pie for desert which did not disappoint. This time around we had the kids with us so it wasn't quite as romantic as our previous trip but the kids enjoyed the meals and the staff were very good with them.

The service was great and we can't wait to return .

Room Tip: Definitely worth paying a little extra for a waterfront room . You can sit back on the couch and wat...
