“A great winter break”
Reviewed 16 August 2014

The warm welcome was just the start of an amazing stay. We were indeed fortunate to time our visit with a jazz afternoon in the lounge. A great concert in wonderful surroundings. The views over the water to Paihia would be hard to beat, dinner that evening in the handsome dining room was excellent and our room was very comfortable. We will definitely return.

Room Tip: A room at the front overlooking the water is stunning.

We had a long weekend break and loved it. Great food, superb character and amazing staff. We had such a relaxing time & a waterfront room just makes the stay that much better. Russell is such a great little place to visit & The Duke makes the stay complete.

Room Tip: Wake up to the sound a gentle waves with a waterfront room!!!!

We live about 30k from Russell and our special treat is to go for an overnight stay at the Duke the accommodation service and food are always A1 and very professional. We love the old world charm it has not been spoilt by being made too modern and has so much charm. Friday nights are very busy with lots of atmosphere the service is still excellent despite the crowds of people and the food beautiful. Lots of places to visit in the region as well all within a short drive.

Room Tip: The beachfront rooms obviously as they get a beautiful view all the way across to Paihia

We've stayed at The Duke before...this year had to cancel a booking for "Bird man" weekend due to flooding. Stayed this weekend and as always, accommodation in Waterfront room excellent.Great staff, great food and wine knowledge and receptionist so welcoming. Weather behaved too!

Room Tip: Waterfront rooms can't be beaten...that vista is amazing.

Under the new present owners - The Duke has gone from strength to strength which translates now into a Royal visit when you stay with them !

You are greeted with courtesy , shown to a clean and tidy high ceilinged spacious room , enjoy in the charming dining room a beautifully presented and extremely tasty meal where in winter a fire near by wards off the evenings chill. From the dining room Table , you look directly out to the blue seas of Russell and the quaint boats bobbing in the tide or sailing by with sun beams flashing off their sails ...
A very nice stay with excellent staff ... 4 stars !
Richard

Room Tip: Sea side would be best

We had a room with water view and it was sensational. It was a busy time in the dinning room but our service and dinner was faultless. We shared the roast Shoulder of lamb which was cooked to perfection. We definitely will be returning someday soon.

We had an awesome stay on a wet weekend in July. Really good valid with a grab one voucher. We upgraded to a waterfront room which was fantastic. We had dinner in the restaurant which was delicious. Haven't previously had a bad experience at the restaurant a few years ago we were really impressed with the obvious improvements that have happened. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Thanks for a great stay. Looking forward to our next stay!
