“Gorgeous B&B with exquisite gardens”
Reviewed 8 April 2013

Marilyn is an amazing innkeeper. She welcomed us with a nice cup of tea and showed us to our room, or rather, to our cottage!!! She has some beautiful rooms in the main house, but we were just behind the house in our own cottage. The room was so beautiful, I almost gasped. It was huge and the bathroom was also large. Marilyn is the most talented quilter I have ever met. the quilt on our bed was a museum piece -- really!! She had left the means to prepare tea or coffee as well as cookies for us. In the garden were fruit trees of every kind and her jams are really delicious. She made such nice breakfasts for us that we had no need to have lunch.

It is truly a gracious, peaceful, beautiful place to stay in Russell.

We spent 5 nights in the Cottage and Marilyn and Lee made us feel very welcome on arrival. The Cottage was spotless and very well equipped with everything you needed (and more). The location was beautiful with views over to the bay and it was so quiet and peaceful. The quilts made by Marilyn were works of art and added a real personal touch to the Cottage. Breakfast was delicious as was the fruit cake left in the cottage for us. It was also only a lovely10 minute walk into the centre of Russell. I would highly recommend Ounuwhao Harding House and we will certainly be back.

This home was one in a million - not many people offer such hospitality as well as history. Not many folk can tell the story of moving their house 160 kilometers and lovingly rebuilding it and restoring it to it's original glory.
Marilyn went out of her way to make us feel at home. Her breakfasts were a real treat.
She is a really talented lady - the quilts she makes adorn the walls and add a personal touch to the decor.
We would recommend a stay here to everyone.

The previous review really sums up our experience of our 3 nights at Ounuwhao B&B. We arrived early in the afternoon and Marilyn and Lee welcomed us warmly with the offer of tea and cake. Over the days we felt that Marilyn was a friend, she was so warm, interesting and willing to go above and beyond the call of duty. As other reviewers have said, the breakfasts were simply superb. It is well located just a 15 minute walk into Russell where there are several excellent restaurants. We went to the Russell Boating Club (just across from Ounuwhao) on the Sunday night for the lamb dinner, and on another evening to the Swordfish Fishing Club (upstairs on The Strand). Sally's was another good restaurant.
We stayed in the Townsend Room which was beautifully decorated with a spacious bathroom with a shower and a claw foot bath as well. There was a wide variety of bathroom amenities.
Thanks, Marilyn and Lee, we would certainly stay with you again when we were to return to Russell.

Room Tip: Maybe a room at the back of the house would be better if you are a light sleeper as the (minimal) tr...

My wife and I spent 2 nights at Ounuwhao B&B and were impressed. The owner's hospitality was amazing. When we first arrived she provided us drinks & cake, let us relax and generally let us gather our bearings. She seemed to know exactly when to approach but also when let us be (a skill not often possessed by proprietors). There were nice touches like the (decent) complimentary bottle of wine on arrival and chocolates next to the bed. The house itself is a large colonial house and a short 5-10 minute walk from Russell itself. Originally we thought the distance from Russell a negative (about 800 metres from Russell) but actually it works out quite well as there is little tourist traffic walking past the B&B. The rooms themselves are spacious and ours was furnished to a high standard. One of the various highlights to this place was the breakfast the owner makes - exceedingly tasty and something I would expect out of a high quality restaurant. Overall a 10 out of 10 for this place and probably the best B&B we've stay at.. We look forward to going back.

This Beautiful B&B offers wonderful service and a very friendly atmosphere. Delicious breakfast, where one can sit around and chat or just chill out in beautiful surroundings.
Rooms are immaculate and very comfortable. You are able to walk into town or just cross over the road and go for a swim.
I highly recommend this B&B it's a great place to stay while visiting Russell.
