Owner description: Nestled in a beautiful setting amid the hills of Paroa Bay near Russell, Paroa Bay Winery is a new family owned boutique vineyard combining luxury accommodation and traditional handmade, sustainable wines. We employ traditional techniques of viticulture and dry grown vines in the hope of creating distinctive handcrafted wines of character in low yields, reflecting the white clay soils and warm climate of the Bay of Islands. On an estate covering 24 hectares of rolling hills, we currently have just 4.5 hectares of planted vines including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot. This private, world-class retreat offers a safe, clean, green refuge and is nestled amongst some of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in the world, including seven hectares of gardens, lavish accommodation and extensive recreational facilities spanning along a sweeping coastline. Tarapunga is an exciting luxury residence, finished to the highest standard, which ensures every indulgence is catered for. Contemporary interiors and artwork, home theatre, gymnasium and gourmet kitchens provide in-home recreation, while outdoor the 17m infinity heated pool and spa, sauna and large entertaining decks capture the astounding views across the Bay of Islands. The vineyard cottage is a two bedroom / two bathroom (with additional optional bedroom) house set among the peaceful rolling hills of Paroa Bay and a 10 minute stroll to a secluded beach. Visitors can enjoy strolls surrounded by acres of landscaped gardens, native trees, birds and vineyards and enjoy all the comforts of this first class home. The newly refurbished cottage offers 2 full bathroom suites, a powder room, an open fireplace in the main lounge leading to covered terraces with a private swimming pool, hot tub, sauna and BBQ.

As we like trying new local wines when we are traveling, this winery was recommended to us by one of the locals as the new upcoming handmade and sustainable wines of the region.

It is quite a detour from the main roads to this winery and don't let the sign fool you which says 6km from the main road. It feels like forever driving down the windy roads. The signage is excellent so you cannot miss it but you have to be patient!

We tried the white wines; the Sauvignon Blanc and the Chardonnay - both the 2013 vintage as the 2012 were sold out...This should tell you how popular they have become in a relative short time. The Sauvignon Blanc was lovely crisp and the Chardonnay lightly wooded so for nearly every taste something.

The accommodation looks very lovely even though I have to confess I have found my favourite place to rest in the Eagles Nest in Russell...

The winery is about 10 minutes drive from Russell through some very beautiful countryside, and a few sharp bends. The winery has a very pretty tasting area with views over the neighbouring vineyards and a small pond. If you continue along the road around 5 minutes you'll come to the holiday accommodation and a great view along the coast.
When we visited they had three wines for tasting- estate grown Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc and Martinborough Pinot noir. Although it was obvious that the two whites came from new vines the Chardonnay in particular drank well. It was lightly wooded and we bought a couple of bottles as a gift and to carry home.
The winery and vineyard were run by a knowledgable couple who were very helpful and gave an insight into their future plans for the property.
All in all a pleasant visit and a good place to go if you want to try wines from a developing area.
