“The perfect relaxing break”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2014

Perfect for a relaxing weekend away. Beautifully appointed rooms with a luxury touch. The hosts, Jesse and Ruth are so friendly and welcoming. Only a couple of minutes walk to the waterfront for great places to eat. Would highly recommend the Flagstaff to anyone looking for a perfect relaxing break away.

My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Flagstaff. It is fantastically positioned in Russell and an easy 1-2 minute walk to all the eateries and landmarks. The knowledge of our hosts Jessie and Ruth was a huge asset! They were able to provide us with an abundance of information on what to do and how to do it.
The Flagstaff also provides private outdoor baths which were amazing on a quiet night. Easy access to a masseuse made my partner very happy while I got to watch some rugby in the lounge on their flat screen SKY TV set up.
I could not recommend Russell and the Flagstaff enough to any couple who are looking for a relaxing holiday away.

Russell is a lovely village to explore the Bay of Islands from and made even more enjoyable by our stay at Flagstaff Lodge. Jessie and Ruth are so welcoming and hospitable and had great advice about what to see, where to eat etc., which we discussed over a glass of wine and canapes every evening in front of the fire! The accommodation is luxurious, everything you could possibly need and breakfast is delicious. Just a 2 minute stroll to the village shops, pub, wharf, we will definitely be back!

My Sister and I stayed with Jessie and Ruth from the Flagstaff Lodge, we were taken back by the friendliness of our hosts Ruth and Jessie. We had driven up from Auckland and were show our spacious twin room, which was nothing like a room I have ever stayed in before. Both Ruth and Jessie invited us for drinks each night to discuss where to go to eat in Russell, with great advice on what to eat. There knowledge of the area was fantastic and had a delicious breakfast each morning and made sure you got to experience local food and drink from the Russell area. I'm hoping to go out and stay at the Flagstaff again in the future and would defiantly recommend it as a base to explore the beautiful bay of islands.

This was the first of our stops in New Zealand and we arrived quite late at night after a long and stressful journey. Jessie and Ruth immediately put us at ease and, as it was too late for us to get a meal out, produced a lovely snack and very welcome glass of wine. This was just the start of their wonderful hospitality in a beautiful lodge where everything was first rate. Russell is a lovely town and Jessie and Ruth very knowledgable about where to go and what to see. All in all a great place to start our holiday in New Zealand and we would highly recommend Flagstaff to others.

My husband and I decided to wrap up a three week trip to Sydney and New Zealand by a three night stay in the Bay of Islands. Our travel agent at Frontiers recommended that we stay in Russell at the Flagstaff Lodge. What a great place to wrap up our trip! The hosts serve wine and apps every night and join the guests in the common room. Breakfasts are cooked to order, from simple eggs to special treats. The day spa was a great way to get the kinks out of the lower back after miles of traveling. All three of the lady guests (one from France, one from the UK and one from the US) had massages and we all gave it a 4 star review. As we had inclement weather we did not use the courtyard or the outdoor spa, which looked very inviting.
A cyclone hit while we were in residence - sustained winds of 55 knots with gusts to 90. The Lodge weathered the storm without any problems. We were told that the power went out during the night, but was back on by morning. Most of the area was closed down for the day, but a day of R&R was easy to take in such beautiful surroundings.
The Lodge is one short block to The Strand, the walk by the water that leads to the stores and restaurants in Russell. Jessie and Ruth made dining recommendations that were spot on, and made the reservations for us.
Russell is about a four hour drive from the Auckland Airport - including the five minute ferry ride. We recommend flight-seeing from the KeriKeri airport to the north point. It is a four hour trip in a 10 seat plane - they fly up the west coast (over 90 mile beach), land, then a small bus tour for 2 1/2 hours to the Point, a beach for tea, then the dunes, before flying back down the east coast over the Bay of Islands. The airport is about 40 minutes away from the Lodge.

We stayed at Flagstaff Lodge for 1 night as part of our honeymoon trip to New Zealand, and wished we had booked for longer! The lodge is immaculately presented as well as being both luxurious and incredibly comfortable, and the welcome from Jessie and Ruth was second to none. They went out of their way to ensure we enjoyed our stay and made the most of the area through their local knowledge and advice on where to visit and what to do. The evening welcome drinks were a great opportunity to sample local wines and meet other guests and the breakfast was delicious. I definitely recommend a treatment at the day spa, and relaxing in the outside baths.
