“Great place to stay”
Reviewed 4 May 2013

We stayed here, a group of three couples, on a tramping (hiking) holiday. We took a 3 bedroom cottage (Number 13).
The cottage was perfect for our needs, having 3 bedrooms all with queen or king beds and 3 full bathrooms. Also a fully equipped laundry which was useful for us. Great kitchen and living area, plenty of room.
A very short stroll to town with its eateries.
Our only complaint was that the floor seemed to have slumped to one corner! It didn't really impact on our stay though.
We would definitely stay here again on future visits to Russell.

Room Tip: Avoid Cottage 13 if a wonky floor will bother you!

Our daughter made these reservations for us before we arrived. There were 3 of us in a 2 bedroom, with 2 bathrooms. We were off season, but we felt the price was very reasonable. I thought our cottage was quite lovely and very clean. I wish that I had thought to bring my bathing suit, as their pool looked very inviting. It would have been nice to have TVs in both bedrooms, but there was a large TV in the living room. It was very quiet, and a very short walk to town, and close to the grocery stores. We would stay here again. We didn't cook, but had cocktail hour in our room both nights!

Our family of 4 stayed here on our trip exploring Bay of Islands and The Far North. Our cottage was lovely, but we did not feel the cleanliness and maintenance were up to standard. The dishwasher was full of dishes which did not appear to be clean, and there were areas which have not received cleaning attention for some time. Two out of the three basins has broken plugs, so had rubber plugs sitting over the open basin outlet.
This aspect let down a property which in all other respects was perfect for our requirements.

These 'cottages' are 3 or 4 bedroomed luxury, modern houses. If you require a one bedroom property, one bedroom is unlocked for you with bathroom. The rest of the house is open for use.
I found the property well equipped, and the furniture of excellent standard. I particularly liked the outside deck area.

The location is quiet, a couple of mins walk to the harbour and restaurants. We took a boat from the harbour to see The Hole in the Rock and dolphins. I recommend dinner at The Gables which is on the waterfront, absolutely lovely.

I had 2 x 1 bedroom cottages for 2 nights. Our bill was £439.

I would highly recommend Russell and Russell Cottages as a NZ tourist.

Beautiful, but very overpriced, not worth the money. When we returned to the UK, we found that we had been charged over £900 for 5 nights
The kitchen was very sparse, not even a bowl to use in the microwave, supposed to be for 6 people, but only 4 plates etc.
Mentioned this to reception and I was directed to the local 4 square shop to buy any extras I needed!
Daily servicing did not include any cleaning as such, just making beds and puting out fresh towels if required

Room Tip: Look for better value!

The first impression is a little toy town but then you realise that the set-up at Russell cottages just works perfectly. 2 minute stroll to the waterfront for cafes, supplies and touristy stuff, 15 minutes up to long bay and a pool right in the grounds if you can't quite be bothered to venture out. The cottages are not exact,y characterful and more like modern apartments that happen to be free standing but having outdoor space to eat is lovely and everything is there that you could need. Modern, clean, easy to be in. Just what we needed as a family with a 3 year old!

We shared a cottage with another couple on our New Zealand vacation, we felt there was plenty of room for privacy and room to move around. It really is a home away from home, it was well kept and clean. The kitchen facilities were good and there was plenty of room for dining and relaxing. The bedrooms were roomy and one had a bath ensuite while the other was just next door. There also was a half bath on the main floor. The cottage was private and also had a deck and small private backyard. We were so pleased with these accomodations. Also, the proximity to town and ferry is just a few minutes walk.

Room Tip: There is a swimming pool for the units, the weather was too cool to use but there were a couple of u...
