We arrived here taking a last minute booking after the New Year holidays. We had been in a camper van for 2 weeks and needed somewhere calm for the last few nights of our trip to New Zealand - this was perfect. The room had everything that is needed for a comfortable stay. We had a room next to the pool but took our breakfast out to the waterfront every morning, just a short stroll to the front of the building. We used the kayaks to go round the coast and also the bikes. The barbecue was also really convenient. Washing machine and dryer a godsend. The Lodge is highly recommended for its position right in the centre of Russell and for the professional way in which it is run.

Nowhere in Russell is closer to the beach and we had a room at the front with the most amazing views over the bay. The owners Bill and Pat are friendly and accommodating and maintain the lodge immaculately. We made use of the complimentary bikes which is good exercise in the hilly region, there are also kayaks and barbeques available for use. We loved sitting in our garden watching the boats coming in and out and although Russell has some good restaurants it was a delight to cook in the well equipped kitchen and eat outside – we stayed there 3 nights and each night the sunset was more beautiful than the previous. We caught the ferry across the bay to Paihia and were so relieved that we were staying in Russell whose elegant charm is in stark contrast to its neighbour.

Room Tip: The sea view rooms enjoy amazing sunsets, the ground floor one have nice gardens.

We stayed here (for the second time the first being 5 years ago under different ownership) for the Easter weekend a very busy time in Russell. It was a lovely stay, one of the highlights of our 2 months in NZ. Everything, and more, that we needed was available and nothing too much trouble for the owners including needles and cotton to repair our son's sleeping bag liner for his onward journey! It was great being in the middle of Russell with its reletive bustle but good to be able to step out of it in moments into such a peaceful environment.
We would highly recommend Commodores Lodge.

we had a room overlooking the sea, which was excellent. Kayaks, bikes etc were available free of charge. The owners were so friendly and helpful. Russell can be quite busy during the day with tourists but the evenings were fine. We enjoyed the spa Didn't go in the pool.

Located next to the historic Duke of Marlborough Inn, this modern hotel is a gem. Most of the rooms border the lovely pool area and deck. Tables, chairs, umbrellas and lounges for each room in a little alcove in front of the big sliding glass doors for entry into each room’s sitting area. There are two love seats, table and 4 chairs, a full kitchenette in that sitting area. The bedroom has a roomy queen sized bed with a nice firm mattress. The comforter is light but quite warm. The bathroom could use a little more storage space but is adequate. Water pressure in the shower is excellent and the water is quite hot. By the way, that is contrary to the pool but locals don’t seem to mind the pool temperature. There is a spa as well as a hot tub. Located in the heart of Russell there are lots of places to eat all around it. The front entrance faces the beach and there are kayaks, bikes, etc. all for the guests to use. Wi-fi is available, but we were surprised to learn upon check out that there was a $5.00 NZD daily charge for its use. When we booked nearly one year ago there was no charge and although management has changed and the room rate was increased by $5.00 NZD per day, the current management honored our reservation price but got the $5.00 NZD back with the Wi-fi charge. One major criticism was that there were not any blackout shades or curtains and room was very bright in the morning. On the other hand, unlike almost every hotel room we have stayed in we had enough light at night to read by.

Room Tip: We liked room 11. The poolside rooms are all very nice.

These guys really deserve their high ranking. This is a beautiful spot in a stunning seaside town and this motel simply delivers everything you need. As a family of 4 with kids 10 & 8 it couldn’t have been better. Good value for money and the kids sure took advantage of the pool, spa, bikes and kayaks. Owners were wonderfully helpful without being obtrusive and (with the exception of kids in the pool during the day) it was very quiet. Best accom we had on our trip right around Northland – We will be back!

Room Tip: We were in 6 which was great, but they all looked great. All seemed to face the pool except a couple...
