“We walked in, we walked out - disgusted with motel Hawkes Bay”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 April 2013

I would like to describe our room to you all and would like to know your thoughts.

My family and I booked into the Apple Motel Inn for 1 week in March 2013. The day we walked into the Apple Motor Inn, was the same day, we walked out of the Apple Motor Inn.

When we arrived we were asked to pay for the full amount of accommodation. $630 (including deposit) - i thought that this was the norm, so i paid for the accommodation and received the unit keys.

As soon as i opened the door, the room sent a very strong smell of being wet, damp and mouldy. It was very overpowering. If you suffer from any allergies, like i do, this room would not have been good for you at all.

We walked around and looked in the toilet where we noticed that there was no lock on the window. The shower had a large split in the wall that ran from one side of the wall to the other. The motel had tried to fix this up by placing this brown glue on the wall. Very unprofessional workmanship - When you opened the fridge there was rust running along the top edge of the fridge and some of the racks had signs of rust in them. The freezer was filled with ice. When we walked outside we noticed that the dividing fences between our unit and another 3 units, were all broken so anyone could walk through during the day, and at night. There was no curtain in the kitchen window so anyone who walked past could see into the unit and you would never be any of the wiser.

There was no phone in the room but there was some wires hanging out of the wall. The bench tops had several marks where the coating had worn right down to the bench top board.

When we arrived we noticed that there was a very large group of males (about 20-25) standing around – their washing was lying on the ground, trying to get dried. There was no clothes line insight or behind the unit that i was to stay in. The swimming pool had not been cleaned for a while.

We approached the owner of the Apple Motor Inn to advise that we were not happy with the room and why. Also, we felt very uncomfortable with the large group of males as we had our 15 year old daughter with us. We wanted to cancel our accommodation and were prepared to pay for a night or two.

However, the owner WOULD NOT REFUND any money to us at all. He kept the full amount of $630.00 NZ. We did try to explain why we wanted to leave but he would not listen to us.

We were also told that the room we were booked into was charged at $160 per night but we were getting this rate at $90.00 per night. Even that figure is not worth it.

At the end of the day, our gut feelings told us to leave, this place was not right ..........

This was my first experience with the Apple Motor Inn, Hastings, New Zealand. - not a very pleasant one at that.

On a happier note - we did eventually find other accommodation which was 1000% better that what we had received at the Apple Motor Inn.

All i can say to people out there, looking for a place to stay while you are in the Hawkes Bay - is - DO NOT go to the Apple Motor Inn

Thank you

This place has definitely seen better days. It is tired and everything needs updating but it was reasonably priced.
It's not a bad location, within easy walking distance of the town centre and okay for one night but I wouldn't recommend having a holiday there!

Nice owner/staff, attractive on the outside, good price, given milk, newspapers and lots of tea making facilities, good facilities overall, great location.
Negatives, my room really had seem better days, some other units had been refurbished, but not mine, internet pricey, I would expect that in the room rate these days, TV not well, few channels and the volume control didn't do what it was supposed to but was ancient.
Overall acceptable low budget option.

We stayed there in early Dec. Have been there before. Charged was overrated as they said it was the 'holidays'. Motel was filthy. Curtains didn't even hang on the hooks properly. Table had not been wiped since last tourist, it was all sticky. Couldn't open kitchen window as there was wheelbarrows propped up against them. Carpet was absolutely filthy with spots on it. Curtains in main room needed washing. Dust above doors, lampshades dirty. We paid for two nights and it was not serviced on the 2nd day. The cutlery door was full of crumbs - had to was dishes before we could use them. The bathroom floor was flithy. It was two bedroom but the bathroom ran off bedroom two so if the person in the lounge was the loo at night they had to go through an occupied room. I could go on but for $140 per night I will NEVER stay there again and will NEVER recommend to anyone. This is the dirtiest motel/hotel I have ever stayed in. And yes, I was a hotel housemaid and we had to CLEAN the unit. Not a good look for overseas tourists.

Room Tip: Book on arrival if possible AFTER you have seen the room.

Disappointing really, embrassing. We are a family of 3 staying 2 nights 26, 27 December 2012.
Our little girl loved the swimming pool & swings. The Apple Motel advertised SKY. There were channels 1, 2 and 3, we had was Discovery but no broadcast on channel 8. The rest of the channels seemed similar- a total of 9 channels. Noticed straight away that carpets were worn and stained, sticky bedside tables and vanity, chippies under the bed dishes unclean and cutlery and dishes were kept in a vanity. Had to wash dishes in bathroom sink before use, with the toilet just behind while washing (strange) poor service, were not given tea & coffee sachets & face cloths during room service next day. Our general feeling was we felt we were in a grubby motel and were happy to get out of there. Note: A deposit was required and we were asked to pay the remainder on arrival, which effectively locks you in. We have learnt something here, to always check feedback from other people who have stayed there!

Good budget accomodation. - Received an upgrade from the Budget Studio we had booked to an upstairs unit - which received great morning sun.
Close and handy to plenty of dining choices.
Front of complex accomodation block was used for long term orchard workers from the islands.
Clean and tidy.

Very disappointed with our stay here - fortunately only booked in for one night. Site run down and in need of urgent facelift. Accommodation very grubby and well worn. Rust on outside and inside of fridge, sofa and bed uncomfortable, shower ingrained with dirt. Site very noisy - loud music and raucous laughter until late. Didn't sleep much at all. Paid $120 for stay and standard of accommodation fell well below that of other places where we stayed for similar price. We are regular visitors to NZ and this is easily the worst place we have stayed at. Never again!
