Owner description: In Sienese territory, just a few kilometres from Poggibonsi, heading towards Monteriggioni, stands a "Knight" on theVia Francigena, la Rocca di Staggia, the stones of which, like a book, tell the tale of five centuries of history.

“Unexpected Gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2014

Saw the castle whilst on a train from Poggibonsi to Sienna and thought we'd go to see it because it looked so impressive and reminded me of castles I'd seen as a child on holiday in Wales. What a treat. Thoroughly enjoyable and informative excursion with wonderful views over Staggia and beyond. The art displays were simply wonderful and a complete surprise. Very untouristy, personal guided tour at 5 euros and an absolute bargain. Remember to give them a call beforehand. Not recommended for the disabled as there's lots of stairs but ok for children.

“Great insight into Siena/Florence rivalry”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2014 via mobile

We had a personalised tour for our family of 6, including kids aged 5, 9, 12 & 15. We were shown around by an Italian who had decent English and thought the stories of the history of the castle to life as we liked around. Much seemed to focus on rivalry between Florence and Siena. The castle space is also used for modern art very effectively. The views from the top of the highest keep are lovely - you can see the old town walls really well.

To enter the fortress you pay 5 Euro for the short guided tour. The towers are locked and are not visitable unescorted. I was only solo but nevertheless the custodian showed me everything and told about fortress' history. He speaks English well. The place is far from being overcrowded (really, I was the only tourist for at least 45 minutes). You can see here the old fortifications as well as nice views of Staggia and surroundings from the tower. The condition of the fortification is rather poor but the whole object looks picturesque.
If you don't travel by car you can take the bus of Siena-Poggibonsi-San Gimignano line (but remember that not all of them itinerate Staggia).

“Wonderful castle!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 September 2013

This place is a little gem. Monteriggioni gets all the attention but Staggia has more impressive town walls and this fantastic castle. It stands proud at one end of the town, has fantastic views over the surrounding countryside and has been carefully restored. The guy that showed us round (I forget his name) was both enthusiastic and knowledgeable. One of the best castles we visited in Tuscany. If you like castles and history this place is a must.

“History with bonus art.”

Very interesting tour. A nice change from tourist traps. Beautiful setting. Our guides were very knowledgeable. It was not far from Poggibonsi, so we didn't have to spend a lot of time in the car.
