Owner description: The Lakes District Museum is situated in the heart of picturesque Arrowtown. The museum houses a fantastic collection of artifacts and information about the history of this gorgeous district. Suitable for all ages, the museum is fun for all ages as we take a 'hands-on' approach to our displays. Take a wander around and don't forget to peek into all of the nooks and crannies so that you don't miss anything! The museum is also the Information Centre for Arrowtown and we can help you with any advice that you need about the best way to enjoy Arrowtown and its surrounds.

We were quite pleasantly surprised at the range of artifacts at the museum and the history and information available at this local museum. It helps put life in the gold rush days into perspective and creates a better understanding of how hard life must have been in those days.

At the time we visited (mid-September) 2013, a talented Landscape Photographer was exhibiting his works in the art gallery. Beautiful work!

Arrowtown just wouldn't be what it is today without its past. A lot of work has gone into helping today's visitors gain a better understanding of how Arrowtown came to be.

Well worth a visit.

Thank Peter L

This would have to be the best small town museum we have ever visited. The staff and curators have delivered an informative and well stocked museum. There are a number of fantastic recreations that my children loved exploring, it gave them a better sense of what it may have been like. We spend just over an hour, though it would have been longer had our toddler not worn her cranky pants that day.

Despite a false start (got there and the receptionist continued a private conversation on the phone and therefore we walked out!) we found it to be really interesting. It's arranged in an interesting way so I suggest you go left at the start. The museum as a whole provides an interesting insight into Arrowtown, but you could probably get the same from walking around the town e.g. Chinatown.

We had been recommended by two different people that the museum was worth a visit - and it sure was! Fantastic range of exhibits, and it completely blew me away to find half of Arrowtown encased within the museum walls. Totally recommend a visit, but suggest you do it on a rainy day!

The Lakes District Museum brings to life the history and lives of the past 150 years of life in Central Otago. You have a chance to read the stories, view the images and understand the way of life that helps to make this area so culturally rich.
The museum itself is well organized and the staff is very informed and helpful. David Clarke is an encyclopedia (or Wikipedia in today's world), and if he is available, make sure you ask him to tell a few stories of like in the area. He is amazing!
