“Interesting self-guided historical tour.”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

The grounds were nice, with re-created (and a few original) buildings from this ancient settlement. The self-guided tour is directed by large, very informative signs along the way. You can go in every little building and get an idea how these resilient people lived, and learn about the physical and emotional hardships they faced. Worth the stop, and I enjoyed it.

“Interesting”

It's Well worth a stroll through the old settlement to see how life has changed, The settlement Is only small but provides a window to a world far removed from the one we live in today take the time to read the signs as you walk through the settlement and try to imagine the life's they lived back them. Well worth the experience

“Interesting walk through history”
Reviewed 10 May 2014

A good reminder of the important role played by Chinese gold miners in New Zealand history. If you don't have time to visit the entire settlement, be sure to at least stop by Ah Lum's store. Very well interpreted.

“Interesting glimpse into the past”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

We suddenly realised that we hadn't seen the Chinese settlement and we were due to leave the next day at about 6 am so we rushed to get over there before it started to rain. I am very glad we did it hough my sister din't get as much out of it as I did. I read all the plaques and really got a sense fo how hard life must have been both culturally and battling the weather ( we saw it when it was cold and rainy - about 13 Celsius) and just at dusk so it added to the atmosphere.

“Worth a quick look”
Reviewed 1 April 2014

We stumbled upon the Chinese settlement while passing through Arrowtown. As it was nearby where we parked our campervan we thought it would be worth a quick look. Quite an interesting account of the Gold Rush in New Zealand told from the viewpoint of the Chinese settlers. They certainly had a tough life.

It is a short walk through the village where they used to live, with plenty of information points along the way. Its nothing spectacular, but if you have a spare 30mins or are very interested in history then its worth having a quick look.
