“Something little different”
Reviewed 23 February 2014

I stayed here for a one night with Stray and it was just great! The family who owns this place was very friendly and you could feel how they enjoy their work and want to offer sustainable tourism. Hangi (traditional food) was so delicious!!! The activities you can choose were reasonably priced, I did eeling and it was cool. The only negative thing was that there were so many bugs in the cottage... Otherwise just perfect!

Kia ora! Thank you for taking the time to write a review for us, and thank you for sharing in our little piece of paradise, hearing our stories, enjoying our food and becoming a part of our family for the night! We loved that you even tried your hand at night time eeling off the lake side jetty also! Unfortunately with living right by the lake, we do have bugs at night which are attracted to the light, and will go into the rooms if doors and windows are left open. We are looking to get nets for the windows fitted for this summer season to prevent trout flies in the rooms. Thank you once again for visiting us here in paradise! With many thanks, Nadine, Karl & Maurice Toe Toe

Beautiful location with beautiful people, so welcoming and make you feel like part of the family, they're really passionate about what they do and trying to make a difference in the world! So peaceful I had the best nights sleep since I began travelling! Food was amazing, and they plenty to do, would love to go back!

Kia ora and WOW! Thank you so much for your kind review. Yes, we absolutely love what we are doing out here, and hopefully that resonates strongly throughout our experience and directly on to our visitors as well. We are very lucky to have the opportunity to come back to these tribal lands to start our tourism experience and believe that the benefits of tourism can create a positive ripple effect for the wider community. We love sharing our history, stories, food and activities we have on offer with our visitors. Thank you for sharing your holiday time with us in our little piece of paradise! Ka mau te wehi!! I only stayed one night but would have loved to stay longer! The location is absolutely stunning set beside a beautiful lake. We even got to paddle a real maori waka (canoe). There is a genuine desire to welcome visitors as part of the "whanau" or family. The traditional "hangi" or maori meal baked in an earth oven was truly delicious and served in beautiful woven baskets. This is a really special place, run by very special people - I can't recommend it highly enough! Thank you Nadine, Morris, Karl and all the "whanau" for making us feel so welcome!

We loved it here. It's so peaceful, but the family running it are full of passion for the place.

It was tempting just to sit by the lake and watch but instead we signed up for some craft classes with the owners and later had an enormous and delicious meal. After that we relaxed in the lounge.

I would never have expected such fantastic service and energy in such a remote spot. It's a complete joy.

Kia ora! Thank you for your review, great to hear you really enjoyed yourselves here with us at Kohutapu Lodge on the shores of Lake Aniwhenua. Thank you for your compliments to our family and the service we offer - but it's pretty easy to host our visitors and make them feel a part of our family when we love what we are doing so much, and you certainly can't beat those views and sunsets overlooking the lake!!! Thank you once again for taking the time to hear our stories, visit our place, try our food and get involved with some of the many activities we have on offer out here. With many thanks and warmest regards, Nades, Karl & Maurice Toe Toe

Stayed at Lake Aniwhenua as part of a Stray Bus Tour. Beautiful location. The food was excellent. Cooked in a real Hangi. The lamb was probably the best I ever tasted. (Even the eel was OK, despite my doubts!). But the outstanding feature of the stay was the warmth, friendliness and will and interest in informing and engaging us "visitors". Really felt that Nadine and Morris were genuine in the interest and passion they showed for their environment, culture and community. And they really made us feel welcome and part of the "family". Thankyou so much!
Enjoyed the cooking (baking) class, and will definately try at home.

We stayed 2 nights mid-winter with our motorhome and appreciated having electric heating at night, hot showers, toilets and fully equipped cooking facilities including fridge, microwaves, cutlery and crockery. There is a Sky TV lounge with a wood stove to spread out in and relax in between hunting in the nearby hills and great trout fishing on the lake by boat. Facilities were immaculate and the hosts charming and generous. What's more, there was a fish cleaning station and a gas BBQ to grill our trout on and a shop with fishing supplies. The pet goat, ostrich and deer were an added amusement.

Great value for money in a magnificent setting. Recommend as an activity base, stopover, or to relax right there.

Room Tip: We had our own motorhome, but were able to use it as a bedroom only instead of trying to do everythi...

Our daughter and fly fisherman partner opted to use Lake Aniwhenua Lodge for thier weekend wedding location 23rd March 2013. Lodge owners Bronia and Keron were exceptional hosts and the Lodge was the perfect venue in which all lodge rooms, campervan sites and tent area's were fully utilized and booked. One hundred and twenty plus guests joined our family celebration. The lake view and natural bush lake surrounds offered the perfect wedding setting. Absolutely delighted with everything available to our family, stage room for the live band, room to set up a kareoke, kids play room, large kitchen facility and to make the occassion even more special the mother of the bride definately had to do some lake trout fishing with Aniwhenua's local lodge fishing guide - Dan Comer. I absolutely recommend Dan, he definately knew the trout hot spots on the lake and we together hooked and released 16 trout. Thanks so much for everything from Marlene and Craig Skeet - Parents of the bride and Hawke's Bay Fly fishing Guides. PS The meal services pre the wedding were so tasty and great value.
