We've spent quite a lot of time recently in rural New Zealand. Murupara is well down the road from Rotorua to Wairoa, through Lake Waikaremoana (beyond Murupara the road is gravel for nearly 100km). It's a small, rural town that has fallen on hard times, like many others in our country, and has a poor reputation following gang incidents. In he middle of all this is Christine's amazing cafe. We stopped on the way back from Lake Waikaremoana. Two of our group shared a great carrot cake. One of them also had a homemade ginger beer. The other two had coffee. It was made Italian style with accompanying frothy milk. Prior to serving the coffee, Christine served a complimentary peach tea to clean the palate. And the coffee cups were brought in advance with hot water in them to heat them first. The coffee was great; so too was my peanut butter cake while my remaining friend had a delightful cookie. Reading reviews on Trip Advisor, I wish we had called in for lunch on the way south.

Gob Smacked ...... No menu. You walk in and ask "what's for lunch?"

An amazing atmosphere where you are treated like the only customer. Toasties made with Rowena bread, melted cheese and tender ham were on the menu today. Not too be missed. I ordered a lemongrass tea and was then escorted to the herb garden to cut it fresh. The tastiest cup of tea I have ever had. Home made ginger beer and yummy coffee topped off the wonderful lunch. A unique dining experience which would be worth the trip from Rotorua.

We arrived there after a long way from Wairoa through Lake Waikaremoana (many kms of unsealed and winding road) and enjoyed the fresh food and the sympathy of (sorry, we don't know the name) the lovely lady chef in charge of the Cafe'/Restaurant.
It was really an absolute refreshing stay.
