“Our second stay didn't disappoint!”
Reviewed 31 December 2013 via mobile

We stayed over the holidays at Tankah Inn. After visiting with my husband six years ago, this time we took the kids. We had two rooms, Coba and Tulum. It was wonderful to have the open door and separate space. For our last two nights we did have to share one room, but they were wonderful and added a real bed to our room and there was more than enough space for five. There is a mini-fridge in the room and the local store is a quick drive south to Tulum. Also great for leftovers if you visit Blue Sky for some pizza!

The beach in the back is amazing. There are rocks that extend a bit out (iron shore) so we did wear water shoes to avoid slips. But it is an amazing snorkeling spot as well! Once you're out about 75 yards you can see so many fish and the kids found numerous conch shells, starfish and sea urchins. The best part of the "backyard" is the palapa with hammocks! They are in the shade and super comfortable. There are also kayaks to take out to see more of the bay.

Breakfast..... Not much to say other than Wonderful!!! As with our first stay, the food was amazing and varied. My favorite addition was the Maya breakfast...our 11 year old loved it. For those who aren't adventurous, they offer delicious French Toast and Pancakes, along with fresh fruit and tasty fruit juices.

Everyone associated with Tankah Inn is fabulous: Bill for reservations and squeezing us in, Willie for the amazing property (and advice!), Loida and Pedro for everything in our rooms and Pancho for the amazing breakfasts - we had our meals planned the night before! I'm sure there are others who served us with no recognition, but thanks to everyone there!

In the craziness that is the Mexican Riviera is a gem of a bay only a few miles north of Tulum. This is Tankah Bay, also known as Soliman Bay. We read about it in Michel Peisell's marvelous book, The Lost World of Quintana Roo, where the author, in 1957, walked from Xpuha Beach all the way to Belize and stayed on the beach here at Tankah. Well, Tankah has changed, but not as much as everywhere else. There are many beautiful homes here and a couple of small resorts, but the gem of the beach is the Tankah Inn, run by the always interesting Willy, an expat Texan who has lived here for several decades. We had the Tikal Room, with a great view on the beach. Pancho cooks up a mean breakfast, which we shared with Willy as he explained to us his theories on Mayans, conquistadors, and all sorts of other interesting things.

This place was wonderful, just as the other reviews stated. Read through them so you know what to expect. It was really lovely, wonderful breakfast, loudish rooms.

To note: I hope the staff gets a paycheck and doesn't just rely on tips. That would be very cheap of the owner, who was not on site while we were there. The staff is very nice.

Room Tip: The Tikal room is loud but has the best views. Spray around the doors to keep unwanted bugs from sli...

We absolutely loved Tankah Inn. We had initially been planning to stay in Tulum beach, but we're SO glad we stayed here instead. Still on the beach, way cheaper, delicious breakfast, and just a really nice and comfortable place. The rooms are spacious and new with AC and plenty of drinking water. The water is beautiful and there is a cenote just down the road for swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, and diving. Two restaurants are nearby (not great, but ok) and it's easy enough to catch a collectivo/bus to Tulum or anywhere else for a few pesos (just involves about a half mile walk to the main road).

Yeah, the "eco-chic" cabanas on the beach in Tulum are cool and all, but shared bathrooms, no hot water or AC, minimal electricity, and being eaten alive by mosquitos for $200 a night is not my idea of a relaxing vacation. Tankah Inn was perfect.

We just returned from a four day stay (9-13 Dec.). The owner is engaging and funny, the room was very nice (with A/C AND a KING-SIZE BED), the location on the beach can't be beat, and the included breakfast is excellent! You will not regret a stay at the Tankah Inn. Tell 'em Dave and Juanita sent 'ya!!!

Room Tip: We liked the Xel-Ha room. In the center of the complex and a stone's throw from the beach.

We read so many positif reviews about that that place that we were really excited to stay there. But we were a bit disappointed by what we got... and especially by an owner more interested in his "own point of view" and tips given to his employees (does he pay them at all ?) than by the well being of his guests...

Anyway, here we go for a quick brief :

Positif :
-small structure with 4-5 rooms
-rooms are quiet big, with an ocean view (even if small view for the first room), clean, provided with drinking water
-excellent breakfast !!! Also according to your own taste (if you like hot, he'll do it, and the way mexicans eat them!)

Negatif :

-if you want to swim by low tide, its impossible, you need to take a kayak and go out "a bit"
-narrow beach and not that extraordinary compared to some other beach nearby
-lack of transats on the beach
-very few restaurant in a walking distance
-owner attitude towards guest ; that guy must have the monopoly of thruth !

In a nutshell, ok for 1 or 2 nights, not more.

For info, I've lived in Mexico for 1 year and know the region quiet well

So, enjoy your stay and especially these marvellous breakfast !!!

We stayed at the Tankah Inn for 3 nights of our July 2011 honeymoon. We had excellent service throughout our stay, Poncho's breakfast was so good it had us getting up quite early! Our room was very nice with an amazing view. The small fridge came in handy too! We really enjoyed the kayaks and the snorkeling in the bay. I highly recommend the Tankah Inn it was a beautiful place with lots of fun things to do nearby.

Room Tip: We liked the Tikal room, it was the brightest and had the best ocean view, lots of windows, not for...
