“better than expected after reading previous review”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 February 2007

Booked this hotel due to proximity to NEC. Read the review after I had booked and was not loking forward to the stay at all. Had booked a non smoking room which was provided. no smell of smoke at all, pillows and bedding clean and fresh, bed one of the most comfortable i have slept in. From someone who has preferred the floor in some more illustrious hotels, this is not faint praise. The breakfasts were cooked to order in the morning, we also dined there both nights. the first night the meal was excellent, however we were disappointed by the steak on the second night. vegetables, salad and puddings were very good. On the first night was offerred fruit instead of the puddings on the menu, fresh apple, grapes and strawberries were very welcome.

The carpets in the dining, lounge and bar areas appeared new. The door to the kitchen was open during mealtimes, this was also clean. Sitting room had leather sofas and chairs, very comfortable, was missing a shade from the light, but as lamps were used this wasn't a geat problem.

Downside, the decor is a bit dated and a bit of fresh paint and paper wouldn't go amiss. was a bit expensive for the standard of hotel, but this may well have been due to what was on at the nec that weekend.

Staff were friendly polite and helpful. Will use this hotel again when at the NEC.

  • Liked — proximity to nec, thai fish cakes, fresh fruit salad, comfy bed
  • Disliked — needs refurbishing, a bit pricy.

I didn't like staying here at all!
I was a little worried when we first arrived. The hallway, which was the check-in area was dark and dingy. From the check-in area we could see the bar, which looked very small and depressing, which a poor choice of drinks available.
Navigating the steep stairs and numerous skweeky door we arrived at our room.
The room was tiny, and very hot and stuffy.
The TV only had a couple of channels and those had the picture breaking up. Why do these places provide a TV, which you cant watch?
I have never seen a cupboard turned into a bathroom before? It was so tiny that it was almost impossible to use. The bathroom was dirty and dated and badly decorated and smely of damp mold.It was so nasty that we would not use the shower.
The bed was hard and creaked all the time. The wardrobe in the room was horrid and the doors were not fitting correctly. Looked like it had been purchased from a junk shop.
The ceiling in on the landing had a big hole in it, due to water damage and a dehumidifier slung in the middle of the walkway, which was a real health and safety issue. It looked really bad.
We attended a wedding that evening, and we left the windows open so as to try and cool the room. Upon our return, these had been shut by the propritor. He said it was a security issue, even though we were on the 1st floor! This made the room really uncomfortabe because it was hot and stuffy. Also didn't like the thought that they had been in the room.
Judging the hotel, we couldn't face the breakfast, and left as soon as we could.
Owners, had a creepy feel about them and looked as if they didn't have clue about running a so called hotel.
I would not advise staying here unless it is the last resort. It is places like this that give Britain a bad name for visitors. All in all, exspensive, dirty and a very unpleasent stay. One of my top 10 worst hotel stays in 38 years.
