I visited with my husband, 3 children and mother in law for afternoon tea. We love afternoon tea and have tried a few places in Berkshire.
We booked for 4 o' clock and they were expecting us when we arrived (not always a given!)
Tea is served in a comfortable lounge with lovely views of the garden. Enough guests there to provide some atmosphere, but not too busy. There is a nice terrace but it was a bit chilly so we stayed inside, next to a lovely open fire.
I sent my husband to enquire about a menu after 10 minutes, but to be honest this had more to do with me being gasping for a cup of tea than the service being very slow. I have waited much longer in other venues.
We were served by Teddy, who was very friendly and offered apologies for the delay. He chatted to our children, which made us feel very welcome. It is a child friendly venue - the menu is flexible, providing a children's tea with less fancy sandwiches and brownies/ mini doughnuts instead of more grown up cakes. We ordered milk for the children and they didn't charge us for this.
The tea was delicious - smoked salmon, cucumber and egg sandwiches, fresh scones (very light and served warm with fresh cream) and macaroons, chocolate cakes and lemon tarts. We ordered full afternoon tea for 2, cream tea for one and one children's tea and had more than enough. A patisserie box is provided if you wish to take anything home, which I felt was a nice touch. Needless to say, we didn't have anything left to take home!
We were offered English Breakfast tea or coffee, we all like English Breakfast so we didn't investigate their other tea options.
The lounge and ladies room were very clean and it was nice to find individual cloth hand towels in the ladies, instead of lots of paper towels which invariably end up screwed up on the floor. My little girl sat and admired herself for quite some time at the dressing table!
The staff as I say were lovely and we went for a wander around the grounds before returning to settle our bill. It was a very relaxing, enjoyable experience and I can high recommend it. We will definitely be back!
