We just returned from GBP El Portillo. This was our third vacation at a Grand Bahia resort and our second vacation at a GBP resort in Samana. The beach is beautiful for walking and there were always loungers available. We did find that we had to be on the beach by 6:00 in order to have a cabana. It was amazing to be able to see tropical fish while standing in water 10 feet from shore. The resort is very nice and kept very clean. The food selection and quality is quite good. We went to all of the a la cartes but our favourites were the gourmet and Italian. The staff at this resort are wonderful. They make you feel very welcome and provide excellent service. We would definitely return and recommend this resort to others.

Room Tip: All rooms have easy access to the beach, pool and main lobby area.

We just returned from the GBP (Apr 24-May 1, 2014). Checking in was expedited as we received our packages at the airport including bracelets. Make sure if you are a returning Bahia customer you let them know. No sooner had arrived at our room when the phone rang. The front desk were checking to see if there was anything we needed and if the room was ok. The beach is excellent and they take great care in ensuring that any sea grass is raked up several times as day. The sea grass is very minimal to begin with. There is a lot of coral which provides for excellent snorkelling. Even without snorkel equipment fish are still very visible. You can walk the beach but will have to check out with the security who will also check you back in when you return. The walk is lovely and there is always a nice breeze at the beach. We chose to have lunch at the beach snack bar instead of the buffet (we don't like missing our beach time!). While the selection was basically the same each day there was always plenty. The buffet at night provided an excellent selection of food and the pasta bar was a favorite. You have the choice of sitting inside or outside. We often chose outside and there is a barbeque each night as part of the buffet. Make sure you try the crepe bar! We tried the Gourmet and Italian as our restaurants and both were superb. Wine in the restaurants is very good and your glass is constantly refilled. The only thing we would prefer is for a better drink selection. Aside from beer the frozen drinks were from the slushy machines and usually melted before they made it into the glass. The lobby bar does have frozen daiquiris. Bartenders only know how to make a very limited number of drinks. Our room was always cleaned and fridge stocked daily. We purchased internet for our room and were shocked that we were able to receive reception on the beach. The grounds are very well kept. The staff at this resort are fantastic. We travel a lot (usually two or more trips a year) and would rate the staff five out of five. Management as well are very visible and interact well with the visitors. On the day of our departure the staff did a great farewell song which everyone enjoyed. The hotel manager even joined the group to sing and dance. Thanks for an excellent seven days and we will definitely be back again.

Room Tip: We were in building #19. This was a quick walk to the lobby, pool, beach and restaurants. Great area...

We just returned from GBP El Portillo and loved this resort. We flew Air Canada and had a few luggage damage issues on both flights. The bus ride to the resort from the airport was very scenic. The Samana area is very lush with millions of palm trees. We arrived at the resort midday. Check in was quick. Our room was in block 23 which was close to the Italian a la carte and Puablo Principle for evening entertainment. The room was spacious however the bathroom in our standard room was small. There are no face clothes so if you must have one, bring one. The bed and pillows were comfortable. The maid did a good job of keeping the room clean. The fridge was restocked as needed.

The grounds were very well maintained by the hard working gardeners and grounds keepers. There was an abundance of trees and shrubs throughout the resort and near the beach. The shady areas close to the beach seemed to deter the need to play the towel game early in the morning. There were lots of lounge chairs. The main lobby, buffet, a la cartes and pool were located near the beach. The light beige sandy beach was very nice. It was great for long strolls. There was a great combination of clear sandy areas for excellent swimming and coral reef close to the shore for snorkeling. The variety of fish was impressive for so close to shore.

There was a good balance of organized activities and quiet time. The animation team was very friendly and made us feel at ease. Nadiuska was fantastic! The staff in general were friendly and helpful. The bartenders were entertaining, especially Euclides at the beach bar. . The pool near the beach was very warm and busier than the quiet pool.

The food was a definite strength of this resort with lots of variety and taste. The buffet was great! The Italian a la carte was our favorite. The Gourmet a la carte was excellent for variety, quality and presentation of food. The staff were very helpful and assisted two of our group members with allergies. They asked again and again if everything was OK with our meal.

We did the horseback excursion to El Limon Falls and the boat trip to Los Haitos Park which were both excellent experiences.

We had issues at the airport when were checking in to go home. There was total lack of consistency. The girl on the desk told us no liquids or gels at all and made us put our small containers in the proper zip bag in our checked baggage. She also told us we couldn't have any food in carry-ons. Some of our group have allergies and were not able to find suitable foods for purchase on the plane so had food in their bags which she made them put in checked baggage. Once we put all food and liquids in our baggage and proceeded to customs, we saw a sign that indicated liquids and gels less than 100mls in a clear bag are allowed. Some folks also took food through and were ok, even some that were randomly searched by agents.

We were a group of 10 ranging in age from 21-55. Everyone had a good time and we will definitely return to this resort.

My husband and I and our 15 month old daughter just got back from a week stay at this hotel. I have to say that we were extremely impressed by the cleanliness of the hotel, the professionalism of the staff, the great food, and the amazing location. We had a room up by the relax pool (block 12). What a great place to stay with a young baby. We were able to bring our baby monitor with us and swim in the pool while our baby napped peacefully about 20 feet away.

Francisco was the BEST bartender by far! He is located at the relax pool and went above and beyond to make sure we were happy and well taken care of. He loved our daughter and would come and say hi to her every chance he got.

The buffet was amazing and had a wide range of food for everyone (no one got even remotely sick off any of the food or drinks). The staff would go out of their way to go and get milk for our baby and even help sooth her if she was crying, by playing peek-a-boo, giving her kisses etc. Maitires and Adalia were such great people!

The beach is FANTASTIC! Crystal clear water, lots of sea life (able to snorkel right off the beach), calm for the young children....our baby had just started walking and was able to practice walking in and out of the water without being washed away.

The rooms are standard but very clean and great size with working air conditioning :), and lots of hot water.

The kiddy pool/playland is great! Never overcrowded, and lots of fun!

We are considering another visit next year!

Traveled 8th April with 2 teens. It's a long journey from the UK, 9hrs flight followed by 3 1/2 hrs coach, but the coach was air conditioned, comfortable, the seats reclined, there was a stop for snack / toilet. The journey was very interesting and we treated it as an island tour. I don't get all the moaners!!

On arrival you will realise that the journey is so worth it.The hotel is situated on a stretch of undeveloped beach. Pure white sand, turquoise water palm trees in both directions. There is coral , not in the best condition but we still saw an interesting selection of fish. I'd recommend you bring a snorkel, you don't need fins if you just intend to snorkel at the hotel beach. It's lovely to walk on the beach, but because it is so deserted, you are recommended not to take bags, cameras etc because there is risk of crime. We did see one slightly dodgy man once but felt quite safe otherwise. There are dogs on the beach but they are friendly and just follow you when walking. The hotel security chase them away from the hotel's area. There are beach vendors who are all licensed and very friendly. Just a 'non gracias' is enough to move them on although they will cleverly befriend you and you will feel obliged to buy before you leave! I had a massage just outside the hotel from one of the beach regulated women and it was excellent. They say $30 for 1 hr, but $20-25 - don't go if it's too windy.

Food was always plentiful and very high standard. Loads of fresh salads and fruit in the buffet, with numerous different dishes. Dishes were always kept topped up, there were chefs preparing freshly grilled meats, pancakes or omlettes at breakfast. A la carte were all great. Italian has the best atmosphere and service, El Pescador food was very good but service not quite as good. Gourmet excellent, amazing steak and leek shrimp pie. They are very strict on the long trouser policy in the gourmet. Our teenaged sons were allowed smart shorts in the other a la carte's but were refused here.

All the staff were friendly and helpful. Had a problem with the spa bath which was sorted within a couple of hours. Our maid asked us the first day what time suited us for cleaning and the room was always spotless. There are too many to mention, but many thanks to Miguelina, Margarita, Hugo in the restaurants, always happy helpful and smiling . Eucledes the hard working barman and Yefrey who sets up his amazing bar in the sea and took us some great photos. We took dollars and left a couple each time for tips. We never felt the staff were looking for a tip and were always very grateful. Entertainment staff were lovely and gave us an all singing/dancing send off on departure, made it feel so special. We also had photos taken by Victor the hotel photographer. We arranged a time and he took 60 excellent photos of our family around the resort and on the beach at sunset. I would definitively recommend you do this.

Alcohol is not served after 11pm except in the disco. Lights are turned out at 11pm. We never went to the disco as like most people we were up at 7am every day. If you want the best sunbeds I'm afraid you have to be an early riser (before 8am or there's none with shade left). It was Easter when we were there so was busy. There was always some spare but without shade which isn't really an option.

The only minor things that I would say could be improved are ; the lighting from the reception to the top end of the resort is inadequate. I would recommend you bring a torch. I also found that the netting on the roof of the spa was loose and found birds entrapped in the netting. I used scissors to release some birds, but unfortunately some had met a horrible death. I reported this to the reception and would urge future guests to check that this has been rectified and if not do something please to prevent further suffering. Oh bring some ear plugs as the birds tweet all night and get even louder from 4am!

I hope this area remains relatively undeveloped as it really is stunning. We took a taxi into Las Terrenas (fixed tarrif $10 each way, arranged from reception) A lovely small town, felt safe, with nice souvenier shops bars small supermarkets cafe's,restaurants, well worth at least one visit.

We hope to return during the whale watching season. I hope the hotel maintains the same high standards.

Room Tip: Golden rooms are nearer the beach and reception. If in a standard room around the relax pool is good...

We’ve just returned from a great vacation here, a good experience anyway but “enhanced” by three factors:
[1] Great value, we paid (well in advance: Oct. 2013) CAD 1,125 in total per person (double) – junior suite with Sunquest, flight with Air Canada Vacations, for the end of the high-ish season.
[2] We arrived on Easter (looked like a full resort) but the occupancy declined during the week to maybe 50% by Saturday (my guess, of course).
[3] Very good weather, two or three (torrential) rains and no mosquitos/bugs. Don’t skimp on sunscreen, especially in the spring/summer months.
Very good/clean room, amazing beach, impressive buffet food (sometimes rabbit or lamb) and very good à-la-carte restaurants (we tried all three; pretty fast service – one could finish a 4-course dinner in an hour or less).
The alcohol selection is rather limited, extra charges for imported drinks but I think it’s fair (based on what we paid). The entertainment is mostly energetic but it’s based on the animation team most of the time.
The Samana airport is very efficient (since very few flights), unlike the one in Punta Cana – sometimes quite a zoo; short drive to the resort.
Sunquest has its own transportation from/to the airport but usually a pretty small vehicle, unlike the Air Canada Vacations buses.
I was OK with the dogs on the beach (most likely roaming free from their permanent residences nearby), I could see a problem by night or for joggers – a dog was extremely willing to play/join a jogger (including jumping on him), no way you can hear them when coming from behind. A couple of big/black dogs from a house after the first gulf (towards Las Terrenas) were often barking mad on the beach but only after an ATV/scooter passed by.
Amazing service from all the staff; ignored quickly the "club/timeshare" approaches.
We’d love to return (but there are so many places we haven’t seen…); highly recommended!

Room Tip: Villas 10 to 12 are near the smaller (relax) pool; pretty quiet unless someone thinks "relax&qu...
