Casas del Mar Neptunia
Ranked #19 of 35 Hotels in Las Terrenas
Reviewed 2 March 2014

We just returned from two weeks in Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic, during which we stayed at Jim and Suzanne's Casas del Mar Neptunia. This was our third visit to Las Terrenas, the first spent at this bed and breakfast. You won't find two nicer hosts than Jim and Suzanne -- always around to answer questions or help with anything you need from restaurant recommendations to taxi drivers. Rooms were modest, but clean and well-maintained. We paid a small extra sum for the use of an adjacent kitchenette so we could fix an occasional meal at home. Simple breakfast of baguettes, coffee, juice and fresh fruit was included in the very reasonable room price by smiling, always cheerful Dominican women. We used the hotel's taxi driver on several occasions; he drove a large, well-maintained vehicle and was always reasonably priced and on time. Neptunia is half a block off the beach, and walking distance to countless restaurants, banks, shops, pharmacies, car rental establishments, and just about anything you could want.
If you are a light sleeper, or like us, are used to sleeping in a quiet rural setting, you may find some of the night time noises disturbing (at times, cats brawling, cows mooing, roosters, loud talking and motorcycle engines can be heard). Just bring some ear plugs, because you probably won't find anything quieter in Las Terrenas in a central beach location. And it's worth being front and center.

We do appreciate your review and are glad you found our location so convenient to everything Las Terrenas has to offer. Although much of the time our garden is a quiet oasis, there are sounds that reach even into our sanctuary and ear plugs for sleeping are helpful, although some guests actually find the rural sounds of cows, roosters or the natural sounds of tree frogs and morning birds an enjoyable novelty. The motorbikes are mostly from the Tourist Police, who help keep our neighborhood safe and secure, but it would be nice if they had quieter machines. We understand the annoyance and are happy you found a solution that worked for you.

What a treat! Comfortable rooms, friendly staff and wonderful natural breakfasts. Minutes from the beach and restaurants in both directions. I had been to the DR once before but I had stayed at an all inclusive and I never experienced the country. This is the right place to stay to get the real DR experience. There are local markets, tour agencies for whale watching, SCUBA, etc. and art stores. Jim and Suzanne, the Canadian owners, try to meet everyone at every breakfast and their personal touch is very appreciated. I was worried that it would be too hot to sleep at night without air conditioning, but I was completely wrong, the fan provides enough gentle air motion and the copious vegetation in the hotel courtyard keeps everything from heating up beyond tolerance.

Thanks for a wonderful stay, this was a vacation that will be remembered for a long time!

We do appreciate the time and effort you took to submit a review and we certainly also enjoyed sharing in a few adventures and helping to make your vacation memorable. It is certainly a different experience than a stay at an all inclusive and we are so glad you enjoyed being immersed in the culture and discovering life in the DR first hand. Las Terrenas and the Samana peninsula have so much to offer and you managed to squeeze so much into your time here while still managing to find time to simply relax in the sun and slip into the easy going lifestyle of the tropics. You made it a pleasure for us and our staff to be your hosts during your stay, thank you.

I recently visited Las Terrenas together with two friends. We had only booked one night at Casas del Mar Neptunia, a fact we instantly regretted upon our arrival when it turns out that there are now vacancies for the next three nights. With the help of hotel staff we book a room at the highly rated (but in our opinion inferior) Albachiara Hotel for three nights, and decide to return to Casas del Mar for the last two days of our trip.

Casas del Mar Neptunia consists of a number of bungalows arranged around a central hut where breakfast is served. The interiors are simplistic but inviting. The verandas are outfitted with rocking chairs, a perfect match for the mellow atmosphere and great spots to enjoy the sights and smells of the beautiful garden.

Breakfasts at the hotel are suitably simple and delicious: lovely fruit salads, fresh bread, pineapple juice and your choice of coffee/tea/hot chocolate.

The Canadian owners and their staff are very accomodating and are happy to chit-chat and offer advice regarding restaurants and excursions (the tour of Los Haitises National park should be mandatory.) When the airline lost my luggage upon our arrival I was nervous about having to communicate with airport staff whose english left a little to be desired. Fortunately the charming receptionist Rosana offered her help and sorted everything out for me (Thank you!)

Overall Casas del Mar Neptunia is a lovely place, tended by lovely people. While admittedly spartan, the facilities are excellent and provide for a supremely relaxing atmosphere.

We want to thank you for your review and congratulate you for overcoming the stress of lost luggage and a scramble to find accommodation and turning it all into just part of your travel adventure. We and our staff were happy to do all we could to help you deal with the challenges you were facing, shopping for some clothing and the other necessities lost with your luggage, communicating with the airline on your behalf, finding accommodations for the nights when we were already fully booked. You never stopped smiling, enjoying the natural beauty, the fun and the dining pleasures Las Terrenas offers. Thanks to you and your friends for being such lovely guests even under such adverse conditions,

An affordable and peaceful oasis amidst the wonderful madness that is Las Terrenas, and so perhaps the best of all worlds. Within easy walking distance of the beach and town (restaurants, shops, rentals, tour companies, etc). The rooms surround the central palapas meeting place/eating place and are separated by beautiful gardens- giving each room a sense of privacy greater than one would expect. Colourful folk art furniture, louvered windows, outdoor shower, great layout, and the easy going nature of the place finish off the lovely ambience of Casa del Mar Neptunia. The staff were wonderful and so was the interesting mix of laid-back international travelers staying there. Jim, the proprietor, was helpful, knowledgeable and personable. Thanks for a wonderful five days Jim!

We appreciate your effort and the kind words in your review. Helping guests is the most rewarding part of running the hotel. A few minutes of useful information can save people a lot of time and help them avoid disappointments. It is so nice to hear that my suggestions or recommendations helped provide enjoyable experiences at a restaurant close by or adventures on the peninsula. Our location does make that easier. Our staff enjoyed sharing your smiles and doing their part to help keep you smiling.

I just spent a week at Casas del Mar Neptunia and can't say enough good about it. It's unique because you're staying in a small, quaint, rustic cabana instead of the typical hotel room. The cabanas are laid out in a circle so it feels like a small community. I traveled alone and met some very nice interesting folks from all over the world. In the center of the small complex is the tropically designed palapa where breakfast is served every morning. Another plus is the location, just a few steps from the beach, and in walking distance from anywhere you want to go. Another great benefit is Jim, the owner, who goes out of his way to help and inform, and sometimes does tours to other parts of the Samana peninsula. His staff is equally as friendly and helpful, and watch over the place day and night to insure your security. All this for an
incredibly reasonable price. It was a totally enjoyable experience thanks to Jim and his super
staff. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: Tell Jim what you're looking for. A couple of the cabana's have small kitchen facilities, a...

Las Terrenas is a maze of hotels, restaurants and street madness. Finding a place 20 meters from the beach, in a relatively quiet location and walking distance to all the restaurants is a challenge. However, we found this place; a series of tastefully decorated cabins surrounded by beautiful gardens. In the center there is the pleasant breakfast gazebo. Breakfast consist in delicious bread, a small fruit salad and jams. It lacks a little bit of protein (eggs).
All the staff members were gracious and helpful. The Canadian English-speaking owner, Jim, sat with us for almost an hour to give us ideas, suggestions and tips. He is very friendly.
This place has a great quality-price value.
