We booked and stayed here ax we were visiting relatives nearby and Aldi celebrating our 42nd Wedding Anniversary. Ken and Salli were amazing with their generosity, friendliness and hospitality! Nothing was any trouble! The vroom where we stayed was impeccable - everything we needed wad there. Sal's home cooked breakfast was delicious, including fresh eggs from their bantam chooks, spinach from their garden, bacon, delicious grilled tomatoes, mushrooms and hollandaise sauce. As well there was freshly brewed coffee, toast and home made cumquat jam and
freshly squeezed orange juice. We will definitely return Sal and Ken. Thank you again.

I stopped by at McGowan's on my way down from Byron Bay just as a way to break up the driving trip. To put it simply, I loved this place so much that I ended up staying an extra night. It really is a gem in the country - Sal and Ken have done an amazing job at refurbishing what used to be an old country house & bank into an elegant, rustic and tasteful space.

The rooms are beautiful with a blend of victorian pieces, pastel colour linens and wooden-aged furniture. I stayed in the main Bank room which is magnificent with its tall ceilings and a fully renovated bathroom with a large iron bath (the shower has superb pressure - something i'm very fussy about!). The rooms and the outside verandah make for an idyllic setting to relax and enjoy the afternoon country breeze.

As all other reviews have mentioned, the hosts - Sal and Ken - will go above and beyond to make your stay a pleasant and memorable one, from afternoon teas to beautifully presented dishes and local tourism advice. The area is also worth exploring, Harrington and Crowdy Head have some of the most beautiful beaches in the coast and best of all they're almost completely empty!

Overall, I can't recommend this lovely B & B enough. Whether you're just stopping by or keen to explore the local area this is the place to stay! Its very close to the highway so it won't set you back on your drive and if you're anything like me you'll end up changing your travel plans just to stay here for another day!

Thanks Sal & Ken - I will be back ;)

Room Tip: The Bank room is magnificent but both rooms are honestly beautiful.

Relax in front of your own fire amidst the beautiful vintage atmosphere at McGowans
We spent 2 glorious nights in the Bank room , which was the original Coopernook bank in early settlement times, and has been transformed into a magnificent room, which gives you a feeling of total relax.
I also loved the black bath and hand painted vanity with marble top.
We were served our breakfast on the sunny morning veranda, home made bread along with fresh fruit and tasty eggs and bacon. Unlimited china pots of tea along with the newspaper what a leisurely to start the day.
I recommend when you go to discover the mid north coast and all it's beauty try a night or 2 at McGowans.

This is our 4th visit to McGowans B&B and it justs gets better each time. The warmth and love that Ken and Salli have put into their home is tangible. The log fire burning in our room was so welcoming and after a day playing golf at a nearby course, it was good to soak in the old fashioned bath tub.

We stopped off here for one night on our way up to Byron Bay. If we had known how nice it is we'd have planned to stay for longer. Ken & Sal gave us a very warm welcome with drinks and nibbles on arrival. We had the Bank room which is large and comfortable with lots of character including the old bank vault and a wood burning stove for cold nights. The 6ft bed was especially comfortable. We stayed in for dinner which was delicious and came with some excellent wine and for a very reasonable price. Will definitely aim to stay again next time we're passing.

A great B&B is a place that elevates your soul and entertains your spirit, and McGowan’s was up there with the best. We loved the huge room, the deck, the sunroom and the gardens – not to mention the most comfortable clawfoot bathtub I’ve ever encountered. Every detail of the decor is considered and beautiful.
But best of all was the thoughtful and imaginative food, and the attentive and kind-hearted service.
I loved the location – just a kilometre or two off the highway, with so many spectacular things to see in the area.
Thanks to Ken and Sal for a perfect experience.

We stayed at McGowans for 3 nights near the end of their trial operating period in February 2013 after stumbling across their website when we were planning a north coast research holiday. We were offered and accepted a trial-period discount of about 20%. McGowans is in Coopernook about 4.5 hours north of Sydney, just off the highway. It turned out to be the perfect spot from which we could check out retirement real estate, enjoy the surf and sun at Crowdy Head and coffee in Harrington. Ken (a carpenter) and Sal McGowan have restored and converted a lovely weatherboard building (that was used in its hayday as a bank) into a very spacious and comfortable B&B with newly revealed and polished hardwood floors. We stayed in the Bank Room which is huge, perhaps 7m x 7m with 4m high ceilings.and retains original features such as the bank vault and entrance vestibule. The king bed was very comfortable, the furnishings lovingly selected by Sal and homely. The Bank Room also has a lounge, table and chairs, a desk and a corner wood fireplace which, being summer, we did not need to use. It looks like it would be the place to sit in front of over winter with a glass of red. The bathroom was brand new with a huge 2-person bath with separate shower and many lovingly prepared details...though we had a tap glitch.

We ate in one night in a dining room completely separate from the owners' quarters. We enjoyed local oysters and a butterfly lamb (Ken had marinated it and cooked it on the BBQ). We had two of our breakfasts in the dining room but Sal served us our third breakfast in our room. They both obviously love good food and know how to prepare and present it beautifully.

There were still a couple of minor items to be completed and/or corrected when we stayed. For example though there was an air-conditioner and wi-fi there there was no TV in the room. Signage could have been better. Ken invited our critique and was pleased to hear our comments. In most cases it was plain our items were already on his list. Ken and Sal have personalities well suited to their hosting roles and we reckon McGowans will soon develop a must-stay B&B reputation. We would stay again.

Room Tip: Though slightly dearer the Bank Room is larger than the other room and this is the one to choose if...
