Not sure where to start with how great this place was for us. After spending a couple of pretty average days in expensive motel accommodation in Fitzroy Crossing and Kununurra, Lake Argyle Resort was an absolute oasis.
Firstly, there is the genuine and, what might now be termed, 'old fashioned' service. Everywhere along our route had been staffed by travellers who's demeanour was somewhere between disinterested and rude. Lake Argyle is staffed by people that actually care about the job they are doing and realise that the guests appreciate that.
We had paid a deposit to cover 1 of our 2 nights stay when we booked. Upon arrival the woman at the desk informed us that since the booking was placed they had started a 2 nights for the price of 1 deal and that we now no longer had to pay for the second night. Both myself, my wife and our bank balances really appreciated this and we actually couldn't quite believe what we were hearing. There would have been no way for us to know about any special deal and you would assume that most (probably all) other places would just happily take the money off you. This alone would have been enough to motivate me to write this review, but it gets better.
Secondly, after being at so many expensive motel/hotels throughout the region that are just run down motel blocks given a new coat of paint etc, the vibe of this place was another really welcome surprise. They have kept all of the natural charm of the original caravan park (brings back memories of great 80's holidays) while giving the place well thought out and worthwhile updates. We stayed in a regular room and it was clean and modern, but not in a way that is either pretentious or a cynical grab for a higher room rate. The cabins are comfortable, private and up to date.
Thirdly, there is the pool. This is truly one of a kind. Beautifully designed in a way that makes the most of the magnificent view. You really need to see it in person to believe it. Every new person that got in the pool after us had the same reaction: "Wow!" I was such a great experience. It was one of the first (maybe the only) times on our holiday I found people (ourselves included) just chatting to complete strangers. I think the old fashioned holiday vibe and natural beauty of the place really encouraged an openness and friendliness in people. And to arrive just before sunset after a long hot day was just perfect.
All I can say is this is the best place we stayed and the greatest experience on our entire 2 week holiday. My wife and I both count this as an absolute highlight (and we also stayed in 5 star accommodation at Cable Beach). No mobile reception, practically no TV reception, but you don't need either. The ultimate balance of charm and luxury. Recommended for both couples and families that appreicate an actual holiday and not just your usual life transplanted into another part of the country. Go there before it gets a write up in one of the big city papers and everyone is talking about it.
No need to stay in Kununurra town. Load up on supplies (we made ourselves a couple of BBQ meals that were better than any of the overpriced pub meals we had on our route) and spend an extra day at Lake Argyle. It's only about 40 mins drive out of town if you forget something.
Would love to go back.
