“Almost beyond Tripadvisor”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2014 via mobile

This place was incredibly special from the moment you walked in. In a way it would be wrong to review it in detail as it would spoil the specialness to any newcomer. The individual attention given to customers was second to none. It is extremely expensive but.....
Also great other guests made this a very one off special experience.

We had three nights in the homestead.
No question the rooms are nice given the remoteness of the location, the food is plentiful (they try hard but it's not cordon bleu), the wines are of a good standard.

But all up, it is overpriced and this is reflected in their offering repeat guests a significant discount. Comparing with other luxury lodges we have stayed in worldwide, this is expensive .

The experience is safe so will suit older travellers who don't need excitement. (Seems it was a good place for people on bus tours to take time out from their group.)

The pool was very cold so nobody used it all week, although it was nice to sit by.

Overall it was an interesting and expensive experience and one we don't need to try again.

Room Tip: The chamberlain suite is the one to get.

We recently (June 2014) stayed for 4 nights as part of a 3+ week trip to the Kimberley's and Kakadu. Without a doubt El Questro Homestead was the highlight in every possible respect. Our Cliff Side Villa was amazing - literally right on the edge of a cliff. All the front of house staff were extraordinary - the service was totally faultless. I must mention one person in particular, David, he is such a character, he exceeds even El Questro's high service standards - all guests who were staying at the same time as us felt the same - so this isn't just a single opinion.

The guests were all very compatible and we felt we made many new fleeting friends - meals are served together (breakfast at any time you wish with lunch and dinner at set times). The exception is that you may have any dinner in a private cliff side setting - they automatically offer you this one evening - but it's up to you. The menus, while fixed, were excellent - certainly the chef deserves top marks - he ensures no guest ever has the same dish more than once.

Excursions (with some exceptions - mainly those involving helicopter trips) are included - perhaps our only comment would be the times of the walks to the various amazing gorges could be more flexible - but then we did not request a change so this may be possible.

This was our second visit to El Questro - 4 years ago we stayed at Emma Gorge (luxury camping - tents with en-suites) which was great as well - just not total indulgence.

If you can only visit one place in the Kimberley's (due to time constraints) - it's a no brainer - go to El Questro.

My husband and I stayed at Saffire in April 2013, so we were excited to try another property of the Luxury Lodges group. While the grounds and tours of this property are unlike anything else - cliffs overlooking crocs, private waterfall hikes, incredibly beautiful gorges - the hotel itself wasn't as impressive as we expected. Our Cliffside retreat, while gorgeous in architecture, had a fatal flaw. An open air bathroom (read: NO AC) in an area where standard temps in early summer are 40°. Needless to say, getting dressed, showering, and even brushing our teeth left us bathed in sweat. The evening meals were served to you in any location you preferred, but the food was lackluster. The dinners were standard meat and three veg fare coated in heavy, creamy French sauce. Maybe it would have tasted awesome in winter, but not WA summer! Lunch was very impressive, though.

Dear Stefanie R

Thank you for taking time to post your review of El Questro Homestead. I appreciate your feedback and what you have written about our Cliff Side Retreats is actually quite timely.

Whilst we loved the idea of the bathroom having a connection to the outdoors, it didn't work in the months of October and April. You will be glad to know that prior to opening this year we replaced the open screen doors with proper glass sliding doors that insulate the bathrooms well from the Kimberley elements.

We have also installed a larger air conditioner in each of the Retreats which also helps push more cool air torards the bathroom area. I feel that the experience you had will not be repeated for future guests. We have retained the screen doors though so that we can swap them out in the cooler months, still allowing guests to enjoy the outdoor feeling whilst in the shower.

I am truly sorry that the dinners were not to your tastes. It is rare that chef does not please everyone, as you would see from his many accolades. I do understand that the idea of warm food in warm tempreatures can be overwhelming, and we will certainly cnosider this as we plan menus for the hotter months this year. We do pride ourselves on our food, which is meant to be simple preparation of superb ingredients. It appears though that lunch hit the mark for you.

I hope that you will get to experience many more Luxury Lodges in Australia, there are so many wonderful destinations to choose from.

Best wishes,

Lori Litwack

El Questro homestead is a luxury experience and a fantastic way to enjoy the Kimberley Region. We stayed for 4 nights which was right on the money for us. We found it hard to find fault with the food & wine or the accommodation. The service was exceptional at all levels, the activities allowed us to experience the Kimberleys at our own pace and we could do what we want when we wanted. All the rangers were very knowledgeable and extremely friendly
El Questro is a high end experience that doesn't come cheap but one that we would have no hesitation in recommending

It is nearly a year since I visited El Questro so why a review now! In terms of memorable experiences nothing comes near the Kimberly region and the beautiful El Questro. The experience stays with you nurturing your soul and tempting you to return, Fabulous accommodation, excellent service, at every turn there is beauty. Worth every penny. Don't miss the helicopter trip to Miri Miri falls, it took me and my camera to a new level!

Dear 672CeliaG

Thank you for the very poetic description of your time at the Homestead. It appears obvious that your stay with us made a lasting impression. Whilst you may have visited over one year ago, the Homestead remains the same and the wonderful features that you enjoyed are waiting for your return.

We do hope that you have the opportunity to visit again in the future.

This must be one of the best experiences in the world... our room was lovely (especially with the bath and shower built over the edge of the gorge!) The view was wonderful... waking up to the river, the sandstone cliffs, the birds etc. Everything worked well and we were very comfortable and happy there, despite the room not being as big as many we have stayed in, and perhaps not as luxurious as some.
HOWEVER, the room is not what makes El Questro so splendid.

There is much to experience there and the service throughout each day was second to none. They have a friendly and passionate team and, over 4 nights, we got to know many of them. It is in the most beautiful environment... I fell in love with the Kimberley... birds, sandstone gorges, waterfalls, swimming holes, thermal springs, a boat trip up the gorge, sunset lookouts with bubbly... and all this is provided free during morning and afternoon excursions, with full transportation and wonderful rangers guiding us. We paid extra for only one trip - an amazing flight over the Bungle Bungles (see separate review of Kimberley Air)

With dramatic 4WD roads and river crossings, boab trees, corellas, crocodiles and turtles etc, we were thoroughly spoilt. Amazing sunsets and we were even lucky enough to catch an exciting lightning storm with heavy rain for our last evening.

I was nervous about having no big selection on menus, as I am quite a fussy eater, but in fact the food was fantastic for every meal, and the chef was happy to take account of my preferences - many thanks... meals became one of the many highlights, to my surprise.

It was perfection every day. I had thought it would be a "been there, done that, tick" place but I am now very keen to return when next able to (and it is a long way from the UK). It costs a lot, but is in fact great value once you have experienced the setting, service and activities. They are exceedingly generous with the food, the alcohol, the activities and their own time, sharing their experiences of the outback. There are too many to name but I thank everyone at the Homestead and all the rangers etc that we encountered - you all made our stay memorable and very special.
