“Great spot and excellent service and Spa”
Reviewed 12 July 2014 via mobile

Recently spent a few days at the Peppers in Palm Cove. The location was fantastic. We really enjoyed the relative quiet of the Esplanade, the close proximity of cafes and restaurants, and friendly service.

Our room was just fine, but in need of some TLC, as the furnishings, paint, sliding doors, etc. were in pretty poor shape. Definitely felt like a partially renovated older building (we were in one of the suites at the front). Would have been nice to have elevators for our luggage, but none in this building. To the credit of the front desk, they offered to assist with our luggage. The main pool was very cool (as would be expected this time of year), but the "heated" smaller pool was reasonable, albeit still cool. Our room pool (one of the upper floor penthouses) was shockingly cold, but the kids swam nevertheless.

Took advantage of the Spa, and the masseuse did a great job. Breakfast buffet (included) was excellent.

Overall, a fine stay and we were happy.

A great hotel. Accommodation is excellent, staff were really good, buffet breakfast was very nice. Only slight negatives were the pool and the lighting in the room. The pool was freezing. If it could be heated in the winter months it would be perfect. Also, the lighting in the rooms wasn't great. I understand that many people like subtle lighting, but it would be better if there was an option to turn some ceiling lights on. Other than that, excellent place to stay

Room Tip: 3 Bedroom Ocean view was very roomy

Great stay at Peppers during June with gorgeous weather making it a top holiday and a destination we will surely return to. Location of the hotel is perfect. Staff were good overall. The pool is the drawcard here and it is certainly something to write home about. We loved it, but as is often the case, you had to battle the lounge hogs putting their stuff on the lounges in the morning and then heading off for breakfast and a spot of shopping before coming back late morning and expecting their lounge to be there waiting for them. I'd like to see staff take a more pro-active approach to curb this selfish and annoying behaviour. Breakfast was average and the set up appalling. Butter on the opposite end of the layout to the break, two salt and pepper grinders to share for the whole restaurant, food constantly running short and taking too long to replace, coffee machine broken, gluten free toaster broken and the list goes on. It was a point of contention for all guests during our stay. Other than that gripe however, we loved the hotel. We had a two bedroom apartment which was okay but a little tight for the five of us. Next time I will be booking the 3 bedroom family. All in all, a really great hotel.

Dear Patricija_D,

Thank you for your feedback it is appreciated. Our breakfast was undergoing a transformation after a significant renovation when you were with us - I apologise it was not to standard at this point in time. I am confident that all is now in order and Chef's new menu is hugely popular.

We look forward to welcoming you back!

We’ve been to Peppers four times now over the years – once when it was still Outrigger. It has a great location and wonderful set up, especially for families with small kids. However, we were fairly disappointed with our stay this July compared to 12 months ago. Not sure if it has changed management or ownership, but things have gone downhill. Look, it’s still a good place to go, but a 5 stars rating is no longer warranted in my opinion.
Firstly, everyone in Queensland tourism industries knows when school holidays are for Victoria and NSW as it’s huge peak season for this area. So, why would anyone elect to renovate their main restaurant right before? Granted they got it up and running after a couple of days, but pretty disappointing. (And if it was due to project delays, then they really need to up their game in getting quality trades.) After the renovated kitchen reopened, things improved, but the poor service tended to linger due to new staff, new set up and new processes. No fault of the serving staff – I really felt sorry for them.
Secondly, they didn't even have a real coffee machine. Now for the uninitiated, not having a proper espresso machine for Victorian school holidays is like running out of beer before a bikie rally. Someone might die. They did have an automated (and free) espresso machine, but that’s like serving cider at the aforementioned bikie rally.
The quality of the breakfasts improved over the week. I think this was in large part to the few old hands that had stayed on in the kitchen. Didn’t have dinner there.
The other major change we noticed was the pool service. It’s gone. No one to take order at poolside, or to deliver drinks. The swim-up pool bar was in desperate need of another server. You could still order food at the pool bar and get it brought to you poolside, but it took a while. (no change there.) Also, the poolside menu has gone downhill – the menu has been greatly simplified, and the quality is just okay. To make up for it they seem to have taken to overserving wedges. An order of potato wedges is now delivered as a kilogram of deep fried yummy wedges served in a champagne bucket. A number of Irish patrons have been seen crying.
Another annoyance was that their formal pool wasn’t heated. Not really sure why. Neither was the spa. This was corrected after a few days, though. It appears that a new group is running the onsite spa operation. Seems to be quite good still.
I’m not trying to run down Peppers. It’s still a good place to go – it’s just 4 star – not 5, at the moment. If they want to charge peak rates at peak periods, they really need to be more honest with their customers. I also want to make it clear that I don’t fault the operational staff. I suspect that much of the problems are likely directly linked to management decisions – but I’m just guessing. The service can be improved, and a bit extra attention to detail and consistency will bring it back up to the previous standard, but it will take focus and leadership, not cost cutting.

Lastly, if you have a false evacuation alarm at 4am, don't you think it would be a good idea too offer your guests a little something extra? Maybe extend the breakfast buffet a little?

Dear Crockly,

Thank you for your feedback.

The team did do an amazing job during our renovations - there is no ideal time to complete a restaurant closure in a business that operates 24/7 - 365 days a year.
As the manager I can assure you that our window of opportunity & permissions was driven by multiple stakeholders and that originally it was scheduled to occur much earlier. Months of negotiations took place.
I love my coffeee too and appreciate your comments - the new Vittoria coffee machine had not been plumbed in when you were with us - I apologise it is now in place and serving brilliant coffees.

Fire alarms go off from time to time and for us this means that the panel is functioning correctly and performing it's intended task.
I apologise and appreciate your comments very much and assure you that the renovations are now complete and I look forward to welcoming you & your family back again in the near future as a valued patron and advocate for Peppers and Palm Cove!

Sincerely,

Chris & team

We had Lizzie co-ordinate our wedding & what a fantastic job she did! Every little detail was perfect! We stayed a week at peppers and loved every minute of it. All staff were very friendly & we cannot fault the service. The swim up bar was a highlight! We are looking forward to coming back next year.

Good location. Nice clean rooms. Massage at the spa was a highlight. Pool area great. Pool bar was busy, a little overpriced.
Breakfast is the really only average thing at this resort. Very ordinary and the service is also very poor at breakfast.
Overall a nice resort.

Good location in centre of Palm Cove
Rooms were clean. Pool area great but service a Little slow by pool. Food should be available from 11am as so many people were requesting food earlier.
Breakfast was the only let down. Buffet was ordinary and same every day.
Concierge was helpful.
Overall a nice resort and will come back again.
