Seven of us rented a 12 metre catamaran for 7 days sailing on the Whitsundays in June.
Our compliment was made up of 3 couples and one 11 year old boy, (son of one couple) We are all in our 50's.
We chose Whitsunday Rent A Yacht mainly because of location and pricing. There are several other rent a yacht companies in the area, all probably offering similar packages.
Several of us had some sailing experience but not on a large Cat. We chose to have a "sleep aboard" on the night before our charter began. minimal cost and convenient. This is a good way to organise provisions for the coming adventure. There are companies in the area that do provisioning but they are quite expensive. We arranged for a shuttle bus from the airport and we had the driver drop off 3 of us at the Centro shopping centre in Cannonvale to start the shopping whilst the rest of us wen to the boat, got the keys so to speak and then persuaded the shuttle bus driver to drop us back at Centro. This is a great way to provision your own trip. Theres a great butcher (P & N Meats) a grog shop and a big supermarket that has everything you need for the trip.
The night was good aboard our Cat although at was a bit noisy from the boat rubbing against the wharf buffers.
Day 1 saw our sail briefing start at 8;00am. This was to take around 4 hours and was delivered in a most thorough and professional way that it instilled reasonable confidence in most of us aboard. The briefing covered all aspects of running and sailing the boat, the only criticism would be that the actual "how to sail " was a bit brief. I got the feeling the the briefer thought we would not be doing much actual "under sail" sailing.
The daily support from the staff back at Shute Harbour was excellent and very proffessional. They always had good and helpful advice as to where to sail and where to anchor depending of the daily weather conditions. We only had a couple of minor problems with the boat that we easily overcame.
Our seven days was spent in various locations around the Whitsundays that were for the most part dictated by the prevailing weather. We were unfortunate to have very strong (20 to 30 knot) SE winds for most of our charter so we were restricted to where we could anchor and where we could go. Thats just part of boating.
Overall the Catamaran, the Staff at Whitsunday Rent a Yacht mad for a great holiday that we all intent to do again.
