Backpackers by the Bay

The hostel is small (maybe 20 4-bed dorms or less) and has a family-like atmosphere. The rooms are clean; all dorms have wooden, non-squeaky bunk beds and air condition. All walls were lovely painted with underwater motives (you can love or hate that ;)). This hostel is no party-hostel, but the Trivia every evening (with a bottle of champagne to win) helps to meet new people and is fun.

The staff is really friendly and is very helpful booking and recommending tours (I booked a 2 day/2 night sailing tour on special offer, a ferry and a day trip to the outer reef (discounted) with them).

The hostel provides a lot of space to sit together or be on your own (kitchen, terrace, pool, front yard with hammocks).
Breakfast is available for 2$, towels can be borrowed for 2$.

To the city center it is a 5 minutes' walk and there is a bus to Coles which is at the other end of the town, there is only a small expensive store in the town center.

I absolutely enjoyed my stay at Backpackers by the Bay and would recommend it to everyone who likes small, personal, cosy hostels with a great atmosphere and great people.

wow, if you're in airlie beach this is the hostel to go to! i stayed here for 4 nights and never wanted to leave! the staff are so so friendly and couldn't be nicer or more eager to help you out. i have read some reviews saying the place was dirty - lies, there are bedbugs - lies, wasn't central - its like 2 minutes to town so they must have been lazy! there are so many little touches that make it so good, breakfast with massive choice of cereals, eggs, toast, jams, fruit for barely anything, hot dogs in the evening for $1.50, free shuttle to the bus stop, help with booking tours/hostels for the best prices, every night there is a quiz which is free to join and if you win you get a bottle of champagne! there's a nice pool, hammocks, the rooms are nice with super good air con, the showers are kept clean, the kitchen is great too and everything is cleaned regularly. the other backpackers in town looked really grotty and noisy but this place is tucked around the corner, the perfect location. what really makes this place is the staff, i can't wait to go back there again!! thank you so much paulie, tim, nichole, gina, beth, jase and of course peter! x

Room Tip: i had a 4 bed mixed room and it was lovely :)

This is a 5-minute walk out of town. The place is pretty basic and could do with a lick of paint but the friendly atmosphere makes up for that. For example, there are no lockers in the rooms and jam jars for glasses. Peter on reception seemed like a really nice and friendly guy. The hammocks outside are a nice touch. Don't expect great facilities and you will have a pleasant stay here.

Stayed 2 nights and I liked it. It is not VERY central (I had a car) and liked the rest. Friendly, clean. The rooms here were pretty basic and I was scared to join the group celebrating school brake (one extra bloke slept on the floor). I was relaxed and I got good night sleep.

The rooms here were pretty basic (I stayed in a 4bed female dorm). However there were several nice touches which I appreciated and think they go the extra mile for. You can store luggage overnight for 6$ and are able to use the showers and laundry upon return even if not staying any further nights. They open a bar for a few hours every evening and do a short quiz which is a good way to get chatting to people if you are on your own. They do a free pick up and drop off to the bus station. Staff friendly and nice atmosphere.

Stayed here recently for two nights as we liked the idea of being away from the nightlife a bit. We like drinking and nights out but also like to go back to our room and sleep and not being kept up all night by idiots! Saying that the hostel is only 5-10 mins walk out of town so it really isn't far at all.
On arrival the receptionist was very good & explained everything we needed to know. To be fair the staff in general were all really good, they all seemed to be travellers working for a bit to make sine money.
The rooms are just a small box room with two bunk beds, each pushed against the wall with a shelf coming off them. There are no lockers to keep belongings secure, no hooks etc which was a bit annoying with wet towels for example. There is a large slidy glass door leading outside with clothes rails but its exposed so not good when it rains and it rained a lot on our stay here.
The kitchen is ok but can get very busy in the evening making dinner as it wasn't very big. The breakfast is expensive for what it is, I had some toast and there is a standard fee of $3 no matter what you have.
There is a free quiz each night at 7pm to get people socialising and talking to each other. It's a good way of meeting people and just a bit of fun.

Stayed here for three nights before and after a overnight cruise of the islands. One night free as I booked through the hostel, and free bag storage as well!

Hostel situated a little out of town, but it's not a long walk, and pleasant views as you go. Just take a bottle of water on a warm day!

Had shuttle pick up from the greyhound station, which was a little unexpected but very welcome after a long drive from cairns. Also regular shuttles into town if you don't want to walk and up to the harbour for those who are setting off on a cruise. Staff were efficient and the rooms basic and clean, though a/c was a bit dated and set on a mass timer for all rooms. If you get a top bunk I'd suggest a blanket (leopard print - available from reception!) just to block the breeze a bit! Was great to only have 4 person dorms (though I personally have a bit of a dislike for bunks), showers clean and functional.

Kitchen was large and plenty of room for people to sit/cook. Hammocks were great. I didn't use the pool and it seemed most people headed down to the lagoon to chill off.

There is a nightly quiz for a chance to win a bottle of bubbly. Good intentions are to get people to meet each other and get to know other people, but the questions are very biased towards Brits/English speakers and little patience was given to those who couldn't understand the questions. Maybe a revision of questions focused more on world geography might make things more fair??

All-in-all, very friendly place, staff eager to help and enthusiastic and well recommended for short term stays (such as when going on a cruise!).
